The Machine Learning Platforms team provides Wayfair machine learning engineers and scientists with an integrated platform composed of a variety of in-house and vendor solutions that enable and accelerate ML development at Wayfair. Our mission is to make machine learning more accessible and to enable scientists and engineers to solve more business problems with ML. We do this by building and maintaining multiple solutions to accelerate ML workflows, such as our scalable model deployment platform and our plugin that allows users to easily configure CI/CD for their orchestration workflows. This role is for a backend engineer who will be focused on enablement of cloud native services and tooling for model development, training, and deployment.
The Machine Learning Platforms team is part of the MarTech, Data and Machine Learning Engineering team that is responsible for building Wayfair's class leading, data centric technology platform that optimizes and powers all of Wayfair's advertising. It touches hundreds of millions of consumers and drives billions of dollars in annual revenue. Our platforms allow us to scale our marketing efforts efficiently by automating key processes, interacting with ad vendors in real time and leveraging hundreds of terabytes of data and ML algorithms for optimization and effective decision making on millions of items in our catalog. The types of systems built by this team range from low latency REST and Graph QL APIs, to streaming systems processing billions of daily events in real time to large scale batch systems.
Bengaluru is home to our brand new, strategic technology delivery center and will be critical to achieving our future growth plans. We are looking for best in class Engineers to come in and help scale our technical products and teams alike as we continue on our path to be the world’s number one online destination for the home. As one of the early members of the team here in our strategic technology delivery center, you will partner closely with our technology and business leaders from around the world to help build the platform to support our growth plans to $50B USD and beyond in the next 3 to 5 years.
The team in the Bengaluru technology development center can work across multiple domains that drive speed and convenience for the customer and cost efficiency across the full value chain. The work we do at Wayfair means we have to move quickly, collaborating with the best and brightest engineers, creatives, product managers, data scientists, and analysts to discover, build, and scale world-class software products.

What you'll Do:
- Take complex engineering problems, design appropriate solutions and deliver on them fairly independently with limited oversight
- Work on a variety of technologies - from model training to model deployment tools using GCP, K8s and Python
- Work closely as needed with the Machine Learning Science and Engineering teams and develop good architectural patterns allowing us to deploy ML models quickly and flexibly
- Design systems that can handle large volumes of data and provide robustness, resilience to failures, and smart anomaly detection capabilities
- Be a multiplier, mentor other engineers on the team and help them become more productive and implement engineering best practices
What You'll Need:
- 6+ years of experience as a backend or full stack engineer
- Expertise with a modern programming language- Java
- Experience working with a cloud provider, preferably Google Cloud Platform
- Experience in CI/CD tools/platforms like Buildkite/Docker/Kubernetes
- Experience working with Data Science and/or Machine Learning would be a added advantage
- Proficiency in designing robust, reliable systems at scale
- Experience in system monitoring using tools like Grafana/DataDog etc.
- A track record of delivering in increments and learning as you go
- Experience mentoring engineers and leading code and design reviews
- Experience in working with product managers to define, break down, and collaborate on feature work
- Great verbal and written communication skills and the ability to support technical decision making with the team
- A genuine believer in constructive and respectful code reviews, retros, and collaborative problem-solving as the bedrock of a healthy team
