The Windows Currency team is responsible for keeping 2+ billion Windows devices up-to-date every day by creating experiences that ship with the latest version of Windows OS, engage hundreds of millions of users, and drive update and upgrade customer satisfaction.
We aim to provide a silent experience to 99% of users of our Intelligent Edge devices while offering control to the power users that really want it. We build the client service that powers the orchestration of Windows updates on the client.
We play a key role in securing our customers while keeping a healthy Continuous Delivery experience that makes our customers love Windows.
We are looking for an experienced Software Engineer II that has a passion for delivering world-class designs and implementation that powers the update service. You will have the opportunity to impact every Windows user by building the bowels of the service. You will collaborate with other experienced engineers to deliver a seamless and flexible update platform driven by control from the Cloud. You will be a meaningful part of a growing team that values diversity of thought and recognizes everyone for their personal strengths and desire to learn and grow.
Finally, you will have a wealth of data at your fingertips, provided by our Update Platform Insights team, that will help you understand how our users are interacting with our features and how we can fine tune those features to deliver a silent by default, with control by choice experience.

- Design, develop and maintain the C++ code base that delivers a world-class update experience.
- Collaboration within the team and across product groups to deliver end-to-end experiences.
- Make strong investments in test assets to provide an automated testing experience.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
- OR equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 3+ years of industry programming, software engineering, and/or software development experience.
- BS/BA in computer science, or equivalent in related technical experience.
- Experience in developing, debugging, and maintaining code in object-oriented languages (C++ required).
- Experience with API Design.
- Sound coding, debugging, design, implementation and problem-solving skills.
- Passion for improving software quality, performance, and reliability through engineering excellence.
- Thrives in a fast-paced, agile development environment and can multitask fluidly.
- Works with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a feature.
- Supports identification of dependencies, and the development of design documents for a product feature with oversight.
- With guidance, learns to create and implement code for a product, service, or feature reusing code as applicable.
- Assists and learns about breaking down work items into tasks and provides estimation.
- Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) in monitoring system/product feature/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions for simple problems, and recommends actions to restore system/product/service by following the playbook.
- Reviews current developments and proactively seeks new knowledge that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $102,100 - $202,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $133,800 - $219,200 per year.
