The Team
Adyen Protect is our ML-first product suite designed to detect and mitigate payment fraud in real-time across billions of transactions. It acts as the shield for the world's fastest-growing businesses, ensuring a seamless checkout experience is never compromised by risk. In this role, you will be helping build and shape our standalone risk integration helping us stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated global fraud networks.
What You'll Do
As an engineer on our team, you'll have full ownership of the features you build, from initial design to deployment and live monitoring. You'll be a problem-solver shaping a core part of Adyen's platform.
- Design and build solutions for highly scalable and reliable distributed systems that are central to Adyen's success.
- Collaborate closely with your team, product managers, and other engineering teams across the Uplift domains to refine and implement your ideas.
- Take end-to-end ownership, seeing your work through the entire development lifecycle.
- Uphold our high standards for system health by implementing robust monitoring, defining SLOs, and creating effective alerting.
- You will be part of a diverse and inclusive team.
- We launch fast and iterate often. Concretely, this means that within your first few weeks, you will bring code live that impacts many businesses and shoppers.
- Collaborate across teams and time zones to make things happen, review code, and be open to giving and receiving feedback.
Who You Are
We're looking for a colleague who is passionate about building robust, large-scale systems and understands the importance of reliability.
- You have a strong foundation in Java, with experience building web services, REST APIs, and working with streaming data.
- You are comfortable with SQL/PostgreSQL and understand how to work with databases effectively.
- You are pragmatic and action-oriented. You launch fast and iterate based on data and feedback
- You are a clear and concise communicator capable of discussing solutions with both other developers and non-technical peers.
- You are a flexible, curious, and proactive team player.
- You have proven experience in building and maintaining highly scalable and reliable distributed systems.
- You embrace a culture of operational excellence and have a solid grasp of monitoring best practices, SLOs, and resilience patterns.
- We are an international team and our working language is English, so you speak it fluently in both technical and non-technical contexts.
- Bonus points if you have previous experience working on payment flows

This role is based out of our Amsterdam office. We are an office-first company and value in-person collaboration with our hybrid mode (3 days in office, 2 days remote); we do not offer remote-only roles.
Skills Required
- Strong foundation in Java and experience building web services and REST APIs
- Experience working with streaming data
- Comfortable with SQL and PostgreSQL and effective database usage
- Proven experience building and maintaining highly scalable, reliable distributed systems
- Solid grasp of monitoring best practices, SLOs, and resilience patterns
- Fluency in English (technical and non-technical communication)
