Job Description

Software modernization at scale is a key strategic priority at Philips, driven from Philips Innovation Engineering and delivered in support of Business Units across Philips. As part of the Code Hub Prime modernization squad, you will help engineering teams improve software quality, engineering practices, and AI-augmented development adoption.

You will serve as a hands-on Software Engineering Excellence Consultant, combining deep technical expertise with the ability to influence and enable teams across multiple Business Units. Inspired by the emerging Forward Deployed Engineer model, you will embed with teams to understand engineering challenges first-hand, review code and engineering practices, assess software maturity, and help implement practical improvements that drive measurable engineering outcomes. Engagements can range from focused discovery assessments lasting a few weeks to year-long modernization and adoption programs, giving you exposure to a wide variety of engineering challenges and environments.

This is not a traditional consulting role. Success comes from working directly with engineers and codebases, building credibility through technical depth, and helping teams adopt modern software engineering, quality, DevOps, and AI-enabled development practices.

As a software craftsmanship assessment lead, you'll conduct comprehensive evaluations of engineering practices for Business Units using DORA metrics frameworks, code quality analysis, and hands-on codebase reviews. This includes assessing software engineering maturity, AI adoption effectiveness, and translating findings into actionable improvement plans aligned with engineering excellence goals and business needs.

As a code quality modernization specialist, you'll define quality standards, coach teams on implementation, and help establish best practices for measuring and improving software quality in an AI-augmented engineering environment.

  • Work directly with engineering teams and codebases to validate findings, demonstrate improvements, and support adoption of engineering excellence practices.

  • Embed with Business Units as a trusted technical advisor, partnering directly with engineering teams to identify opportunities, validate findings, and accelerate adoption of software engineering and AI-enabled development best practices.

Software Craftsmanship Assessment

  • Conduct comprehensive software craftsmanship and engineering practices assessments for Business Units

  • Assess code quality maturity, test automation discipline, code review rigor, technical debt management

  • Evaluate software engineering practices: clean code, refactoring discipline, design patterns, SOLID principles

  • Co-design improvement plans with BU teams and Prime squad members focused on engineering excellence

  • Establish baseline metrics using engineering telemetry (Dev Lake, code quality tools) and validate outcomes after improvements

  • Document assessment patterns, best practices, and lessons learned for reuse across engagements

Code Quality Modernization & Standards Definition

  • Define code quality standards and quality gate thresholds (SonarQube quality profiles, CodeScene rules, complexity limits)

  • Establish quality baselines and continuous improvement tracking mechanisms through metrics dashboards

  • Guide technical debt reduction strategies using behavioral code analysis (CodeScene)

AI-Augmented Software Engineering Practices

  • Assess AI-augmented development practices maturity across BU teams (GitHub Copilot, AI code review)

  • Coach teams on responsible AI-assisted coding for healthcare software development in regulated environments

  • Evaluate AI productivity impact and alignment with software craftsmanship standards

  • Support BUs in balancing AI efficiency gains with code quality, maintainability, and regulatory compliance

Knowledge Transfer

  • Provide technical mentoring, hands-on training, and pair programming with BU DevOps engineers to ensure sustained improvements post-engagement

  • Document delivered patterns, measure outcomes against improvement plan objectives, and conduct BU handoffs

You are the right fit if you have:

  • Residency in the Netherlands

  • 7+ years of software development or engineering experience with strong focus on software craftsmanship, code quality, and engineering practices

  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior stakeholders, build trusted relationships, and drive adoption of engineering excellence practices across diverse organizations without direct reporting authority.
