Job Description:

In order to support us, Airbus Defence and Space is looking for a

Software Developer (d/f/m) - Cloud/AI/Big Data Platform Team (Automation Focus)

About the project

The project you will be working on represents Airbus Defence and Space analytics capabilities for our largest customers and all our large aircraft. It delivers improved performance and customer experience, enabling a rapid understanding of the potential of digitisation for our customers.

About the role
We are looking for Software Developer to join our Analytics & Data Engineering department and help us maintain, evolve, and scale our already existing Big Data platform.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working at the intersection of infrastructure, data, and software engineering, and who is passionate about building reliable, secure, and reusable platforms that empower data teams.

You will be at the forefront of further developing our Data Analytics solutions, focusing on automation to enhance our platform's efficiency, reliability, and security. The main task will be to overcome major technological challenges in dealing with large amounts of data. In addition to creating new services, you will be responsible for maintaining existing services, limiting technical debt, and actively incorporating technological developments in the areas of Cloud, Big Data, and AI.

You will play a key part in ensuring that our Kubernetes-based, open‑source-driven data platform is robust, secure, and ready to support growing analytical and business needs.

From orchestration, automation, new technologies on-boarding to monitoring and the creation of the utilities on which everything runs.

Your work will directly impact how data is produced, processed, and consumed across the organization. This role is also available with reduced weekly hours and an adapted scope of tasks.

Your location

Located about an hour’s drive north of Munich, Manching is an up-and-coming market town that offers a wide range of leisure and cultural activities. Here, you can enjoy the quality of life in the countryside while the pleasures of near-by cities are still within easy reach

Your benefits

  • Attractive salary and special payments

  • 30 days paid vacation and extra days-off for special occasions

  • Excellent upskilling opportunities and great international, group wide development prospects

  • Special benefits: employer-funded pension, employee stock options, discounted car leasing, special conditions for insurances, subsidies for public transport, employee benefits at cooperating companies

  • On-site-facilities: Medical officer for check-ups and other health-related services, canteen and cafeteria, kindergarten close to the site

  • Compatibility of family & work (job sharing, part-time models, flexible working hours, individual timeout)

  • Working in a diverse environment, with more than 140 nationalities, where every voice is heard

Your tasks and responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement automation and self-service solutions for our Kubernetes based cloud/AI/big data platform.

  • Create and maintain monitoring and alerting systems to ensure platform stability and performance.

  • Identify and address general automation needs within the platform.

  • Collaborate with the Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team to improve system reliability and up time.

  • Develop and implement Network and Platform security concepts.

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to understand requirements and deliver high-quality solutions.

  • Stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends and technologies to drive continuous improvement.

  • Design and implement orchestration and automation for data workloads and platform services.

  • Build effective abstractions and templates that hide the complexity of distributed systems from end users (e.g., templatized deployments for Airflow, query engines, and other shared data services).

  • Enable self-service platform capabilities through reusable patterns, standardized configurations, and opinionated defaults.

  • Ensure platform security, compliance, and access control, following best practices and company standards.

  • Expand and replicate the platform across environments (e.g., dev, test, prod, regions) in a consistent and repeatable way.

  • Collaborate closely with data engineers, analytics engineers, and data scientists to understand their needs and translate them into platform abstractions.

  • Improve observability (monitoring, logging, alerting) and operational excellence.

  • Contribute to documentation, standards, and internal best practices for platform usage.

Desired skills and qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • Good knowledge about data structures and algorithms.

  • Proven experience as a Software Developer, with a focus on automation, microservices, webservices and backends.

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, or Scala.

  • Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and their automation tools.

  • Strong background in Linux system administration and scripting.

  • Experience with containerization and orchestration using Kubernetes.

  • Knowledge of big data processing frameworks, particularly Apache Spark.

  • Experience with monitoring and alerting systems (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Nagios).

  • Familiarity with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles and practices.

  • Experience with firewall management and network security.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and a mindset focused on reliability, scalability, and continuous improvement.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams and communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Fluent English skills are required, proficiency in German is advantageous

Nice to have:

  • Experience with AI/ML technologies and big data platforms

  • Knowledge of infrastructure as code (IaC) tools like Terraform or Ansible.

  • Familiarity with other big data technologies such as Hadoop, Hive, or Kafka.

  • Certifications in Kubernetes (e.g., CKAD, CKA) or cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).

  • Familiarity with version control and collaboration platforms (e.g., Bitbucket, GitHub, GitLab, or similar).

  • Familiarity with modern table formats or data lake technologies (e.g., Iceberg, Delta Lake, Hudi, or similar).

  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and developer enablement.

  • Exposure to multi-cluster or multi-environment Kubernetes setups.

  • Experience with platform replication, disaster recovery, or high-availability architectures.
