More about our mission and what we offer.
Job DescriptionWe're looking for an SMB Business Development Manager (BDM) to join the Payouts team within Wise Platform in North America — a new and growing part of our business.
Wise Platform powers cross-border payments for banks, enterprise corporations, and global tech platforms, connecting over 80 financial institutions and platforms through our technology stack.
What is the Payouts Team?
Payouts sits at the intersection of our enterprise platform tech (Wise Platform) and corporate treasury needs (Wise Business). We specifically serve corporate and enterprise customers who need to move their own funds globally at scale — such as insurance companies paying claims, marketing platforms paying digital publishers, or media platforms paying creator royalties. These enterprise customers connect to Wise's infrastructure via our suite of APIs using our Send Money Product to make domestic and cross-border payments, all over the world.
This is an early role on a new team. You'll be one of the first three hires, and you'll own the front door — every inbound lead that arrives for Payouts in North America comes to you first — as well as being the driving force to win new small business logos.
A Bit About the Role
This is an individual contributor role based in Austin, TX, reporting to the Head of Payouts, North America. As one of the first three hires on this team, you'll work with more of Wise than almost anyone — Compliance, RevOps, Marketing, the wider Wise Platform team, and Wise Business.
You'll own SMB demand for Payouts in North America. All of it: the demand you create, and the demand that arrives.
Creating pipeline is daily work. You'll prospect into a defined list of target SMB accounts and own the motion end to end — who to go after, what to say, what's landing. Marketing, RevOps and Enablement will build it with you, but the pipeline is yours. Most people in this seat inherit someone else's sequences. You'll help to define what works.
What arrives inbound is a different skill. Most of Wise's inbound leads belong somewhere other than Payouts — Wise Business, another Platform team, or nowhere at all. Working out which, fast, is what keeps the rest of the team focused on the right things. There's no routing logic today. You'll help build the motion from the ground up, and the next ten hires will run on it.
You'll close deals, too. The small, fast opportunities you surface — inbound or outbound — are yours to manage and win.
Two Things Worth Knowing Up Front
You'll be measured on more than closed revenue. Speed-to-lead, qualification accuracy, clean routing and meetings created for our AEs sit alongside the deals you close yourself. Your own number will be real but modest — the value in this seat is the pipeline you create for everyone else.
It's a genuine springboard. The team goes from one person to four in the next eighteen months, and a Mid-Market Business Development Manager (BDM) seat comes with it. The person who has screened every inbound lead in the region — who knows the verticals, the compliance boundary and the customers cold — is the obvious internal candidate. Other paths run into account management, Wise Business, or the wider Wise Platform commercial team.
What You'll Do
Own the inbound queue end to end. Every Payouts lead in North America comes to you first — qualify, disqualify or route, quickly and consistently.
Own the outbound motion. A defined list of target SMB accounts, worked daily. This isn't the thing you do when the queue is quiet.
Close the small deals. Deals that are squarely on-ICP but don't warrant a Mid-Market or Enterprise motion are yours end to end, on short cycles.
Lead client calls. Pitch the value of Wise and represent Wise Platform at industry events.
Write handoffs an AE can act on. Clear context, clear reasoning, no rework.
Build the rubric. There's no documented routing logic, disqualification criteria or handoff format today. You'll help create them.
Tell us what inbound is really producing. You'll see quality shift before anyone else does, and that signal shapes where we invest.
Keep the pipeline honest. Clean CRM data and accurate forecasts are how we learn what's working — that's the job, not admin.
About You
1–3 years in sales development or inside sales. Inbound and outbound prospecting at volume, measured on meeting quality rather than meeting count.
Plus real closing experience. You'll own SMB opportunities end to end, so you've carried a number and know what it takes to beat it consistently — booking meetings and closing deals are different jobs, and you've done both.
You're comfortable saying no. You'll decline inbound queries more than you advance, clearly and without hedging.
You write well, and fast. Routing notes, disqualification rationale, handoffs — most of your output is written, and a vague handoff costs someone else a day. Strong communication is key.
You're curious about the whole business. You'll be deciding daily which part of Wise a customer belongs to. The people who thrive here want to understand the whole map.
You're organized. You can manage a live inbound queue, your own pipeline, customer meetings and a CRM that has to stay accurate — all running at once, all day. Deciding what waits is the actual skill.
Payments experience is a bonus, not a requirement. If you're sharp, curious, and hungry to learn, we'll teach you the rest.
