POSITION SUMMARY

Lay out and fabricate metal structural parts, such as plates, bulkheads, and frames. Brace them in position within the hull of ships for riveting or welding. May prepare molds and templates for fabrication of nonstandard parts according to specifications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: Because Eastern Shipbuilding is continually growing to meet the needs of our customers, the essential duties and responsibilities may be different than described.

  • Regular attendance at work and the ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays.

  • Comply with company, Federal, State, and local safety, ethics, and environmental rules, regulations, and policies while performing duties.

  • Assist in aligning parts in relation to each other, using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls.

  • Assist in preparing molds and templates for the fabrication of nonstandard parts.

  • Assist in installing packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members, such as doors, hatches, brackets, and clips.

  • Tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding.

  • Lay out parts, bulkheads, and frames

  • Loft parts from a table of offsets

  • Make quality cuts with torch or plasma

  • Flag cranes, figure weights, and know how to rig all types of lifts

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

May indirectly supervise and train subordinates.

REQUIREMENTS

Education/ Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalent, plus one to three years shipfitting experience desired. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Knowledge of materials, methods, and the appropriate tools to construct marine vessels; knowledge of ship terminology. Must be able to cut and burn with a torch or plasma cutter. Tack weld with 7018 6011 stainless rod, mig, and aluminum. Requires knowledge of ship terminology, safety, and OSHA regulations.

Skills: Ability to read and comprehend written, oral, or diagram forms. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to read and understand blueprints. Knowledge of the safe operation and use of hand and power tools. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure. Ability to read a tape measure.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing throughout the workday. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be physically and medically qualified to wear all required personal protective equipment, as prescribed under Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. The employee must be able to work above ground at heights of a minimum of 50 feet aloft and/or working from scaffolding and/or man-lifts while working with machinery; in confined spaces and withstanding extreme heat and cold in an outside climate or confined space.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee may be exposed to the risk of electrical shock, moving mechanical parts, vibration, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, continual loud noise, and other hazards found in a heavy industrial shipyard environment. Rigorous compliance with safety procedures, policies, and personal safety equipment requirements is therefore mandatory.
