Job Description

Role Summary

The Senior Technology Scout is a key individual contributor within the Technology Scouting & Foresight team, responsible for identifying, analyzing, and translating emerging technologies into actionable insights and early-stage opportunity assessments for Bose Research, Corporate Strategy, and Product Category teams. Building on Bose’s strong consumer, automotive, and professional audio businesses, this role plays a critical part in discovering future growth platforms and influencing long-term research investments.
This role combines strategic foresight, horizon scanning, ecosystem sensing, market and technology analysis, and deep collaboration with internal subject-matter experts. The Senior Technology Scout reports to the Director of Technology Scouting & Foresight and works closely with Research Directors, Corporate Strategy, Category leaders, and external research partners. This is a high-impact, senior individual-contributor role suited for individuals who excel in ambiguity, see patterns across domains, and can convert complex technical signals into clear, strategic insights.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct systematic horizon scanning across academia, startups, patents, conferences, and standards bodies to identify emerging technologies relevant to sound, audio, sensing, materials, AI, human interaction, and adjacent innovation areas.

Develop technology landscapes, deep dives, competitive analyses, and domain mapping to inform long-term research and investment decisions.

Evaluate technical potential, technology readiness levels, ecosystem maturity, IP patterns, and market trajectories for emerging technologies.

Create Opportunity Briefs that clearly articulate opportunity spaces, risks, enabling technologies, and recommended next steps.

Collaborate with internal researchers and technical experts to scope rapid feasibility sprints that validate emerging signals.

Maintain and grow relationships with external researchers, startups, universities, national labs, and innovation networks.

Contribute to the development of foresight frameworks, scanning methodologies, and the annual Technology Opportunity Portfolio.

Monitor competitive trends and adjacent industry developments to identify potential disruptions or strategic shifts.

Prepare and deliver clear written and verbal synthesis of insights for senior leadership audiences.

Serve as a catalyst for future-oriented thinking across the company.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related discipline.

5–10 years of experience in R&D, applied research, technology strategy, venture scouting, innovation consulting, or related emerging technology fields.

Broad technical fluency across one or more relevant domains (e.g. audio, acoustics, sensing, AI/ML, materials science, haptics, human interaction). Expertise in all areas is not required.

Demonstrated ability to identify and synthesize emerging technology signals into actionable insights or opportunity assessments.

Strong analytical and systems-thinking skills with the ability to make sense of ambiguous, fast-changing technology spaces.

Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to translate complex technical information into clear insights for both technical and non-technical audiences.

Experience evaluating early-stage technologies, including technical maturity, ecosystem dynamics, and strategic fit.

Ability to collaborate effectively across research, strategy, and business functions, influencing without authority.

Comfort with ambiguity and a learning-oriented, hypothesis-driven approach to exploration.

Preferred Qualifications

Background in technology foresight, scenario planning, IP landscaping, or research portfolio strategy.

Experience working with venture capital, accelerators, national labs, or research consortia.

Experience in consumer electronics, automotive, audio technology, sensing, materials, or emerging interface technologies.

Strong existing network across technology, academic, or venture ecosystems.

Advanced degree in engineering, applied sciences, design strategy, business, or related fields.
