The Senior OpenShift Virtualization Engineer is responsible for the design, administration, and operational support of Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization environments in enterprise, mission-critical landscapes. This role is a senior-level position, providing technical leadership for virtualized workloads running on OpenShift, supporting day-to-day operations, platform stability, migrations, and continuous improvement.


Key Responsibilities

OpenShift Virtualization Administration & Operations

  • Design, deploy, and administer Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization environments supporting enterprise and mission‑critical workloads.
  • Provision, configure, and manage virtual machines on OpenShift, including CPU, memory, storage, networking, and lifecycle operations (create, modify, migrate, decommission)
  • Administer and maintain OpenShift cluster components relevant to virtualization, including control plane, worker nodes, and virtualization operators.
  • Implement and manage high availability (HA), resiliency and DR for virtualized workloads, ensuring alignment with application SLAs.
  • Co-ordinate upgrades, patching, and maintenance of OpenShift clusters and virtualization components in accordance with change management processes.
  • Optimize cluster and VM performance, capacity utilization, and resource consumption (CPU, memory, storage, and network)
  • Troubleshoot complex issues related to VM startup failures, live migration, storage performance, networking, and cluster health.
  • Function as a senior technical escalation point for OpenShift Virtualization–related incidents and operational challenges. Help the team with knowledge sharing and mentoring the junior members
  • Manage case escalation with Red Hat support for issue resolution.

Automation & Scripting

  • Develop and maintain scripts and automation to support provisioning, configuration, monitoring, and operational tasks.

Migration & Integration

  • Support VM migrations from VMware or other hypervisors to OpenShift Virtualization
  • Assist in planning and executing virtualization modernization initiatives.
  • Maintain coexistence and interoperability between OpenShift Virtualization and existing hypervisor platforms.

Security, Monitoring & Compliance

  • Implement and maintain platform security best practices in alignment with enterprise standards.
  • Support audit, compliance, and operational reporting requirements.

Collaboration & Documentation

  • Work closely with platform, cloud, storage, and network teams.
  • Create and maintain operational documentation, runbooks, and standard operating procedures.

Required Skills & Experience

Core Technical Skills

  • Strong, senior-level experience with OpenShift Virtualization 
  • Proven experience operating OpenShift clusters in enterprise environments
  • Hands-on experience with scripting (e.g., Bash, Python, or equivalent)
  • Deep understanding of virtualization concepts (compute, storage, networking, HA, DR)

Required Certifications

  • Red Hat Certified Specialist in OpenShift Virtualization (RHCSOA)
  • Red Hat Certified OpenShift Administrator (RHCOA)

Desired / Nice-to-Have Skills

  • VMware vSphere administration experience
  • Experience with other hypervisors (e.g., Nutanix, KVM, etc.)
  • Exposure to container-native storage and networking solutions
  • Experience supporting hybrid or multi-platform virtualization environments.

Experience Level

  • 8+ years of infrastructure or virtualization experience, with significant hands-on OpenShift exposure

Work Environment

  • Enterprise, managed services, and client-facing environments
  • Participation in on-call rotations and support outside standard business hours as required.
