The Role

Work with customers, our partners and Backbasers in implementation and support projects around the globe. How would you guide them to success?



This is an exciting position where you will be exposed to a variety of environments and technologies within different organizations around the world. As a valued member of the team, you will be working closely with all disciplines such as BE Engineers, FE Engineers, QA Engineers, Solution Architects and Business Analysts on the successful delivery of Backbase software to our customers.

You design, develop and oversee the implementation of solutions that improve the production-readiness of our product. You help identify and resolve production issues... before we release them to our customers. Using your deep Java knowledge and Ops skillset, you push our test environments to their limits. Once you’ve pinpointed code or system-level application concerns, you work closely with Engineers to help them improve the quality of the Backbase deliverables; ensuring they are well-architected, secure, high-performance, highly-available, observable, resilient, operable and maintainable.

A Cloud-native, microservices architecture underpins our backend services and exposes our RESTful APIs. Our containerised applications are managed by Kubernetes on our Backbase-as-a-Service cloud offering, or at our customers’ private cloud.

You will become an expert in operating Backbase services. You are in close contact with our SaaS (Backbase-as-a-Service) and Customer Success teams plus customers and partners which leads to valuable input to improve our product in your collaboration with our R&D teams. With an ever-growing number of implementations, you will help to shape how Backbase services are run and validated.

● You have a solid computer science grounding - backed by significant commercial software development experience. These enable you to quickly gain familiarity with complex software products/deployments and use that knowledge to help diagnose and reproduce issues efficiently;
● You have experience developing, operating and tuning Java applications;
● Performance testing and profiling of distributed systems;
● Familiarity with load-generating tools like Gatling, K6 and JMeter;
● Profiling Java application bottlenecks and tuning;
● Familiarity with observability / Application Performance Monitoring systems (e.g. New Relic, Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack)
● RDBMS databases and query optimisation;
● You have extensively worked with containerisation (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes);
● You have a strong understanding of CI/CD principles and experience with tooling such as Github Actions, Helm and ArgoCD;
● Solid Linux/Unix fundamentals and significant shell scripting experience;
● Solid understanding of networking and TCP/IP;
● You have a strong desire to work in a fast-paced dynamic environment where you have a lot of responsibilities and see the immediate impact of your efforts;
● You lead by example and take pride in delivering reliable solutions;
● You are flexible, balanced, and always striving for improvements;
● You love efficiency and find smart ways to automate tasks for you and your team;
● Needless to say, your communication skills are excellent, you’re extremely approachable and you build rapport and relationships quickly;
● You’ve written operation run-books and good-practice guides that have been adopted in production;
● Your organisational and prioritisation skills are excellent and you can quickly make sound judgement calls when assessing the urgency and criticality of issues found;
● You have an eye for quality and a general desire to improve continually. You will look at all opportunities for optimisation and drive those through with the support of your team and key stakeholders. You use data to support your recommendations;
● Willingness to be part of an out of office hours Support rota for a 3rd level support for our Level 1 & 2 customer support teams;
● Willingness to travel;

 

Experience with the following a considerable plus:
● Infrastructure as code (e.g. Terraform, CloudFormation);
● Eventing/messaging frameworks such as JMS, Azure ServiceBus and Kafka;
● Chaos/Resilience test tools such as Chaos Tool Kit or Gremlin.
