To support our growth objectives at AXIS, we are investing significantly in our Exposure and Modelling systems. This position is for a Senior Software Engineer in the Reinsurance and Enterprise Risk, Pricing & Modelling Systems department which is responsible for the development and maintenance of AXIS’ reinsurance as well as enterprise-wide pricing, modelling and exposure management systems and applications.

You will be providing your experience, expertise, critical thinking, and creativity to help evolve the Exposure and Modelling ecosystem in new and innovative ways while collaborating as part of a dynamic and agile team. As part of a global team, you will be working with highly experienced talent across different time zones to enhance existing solutions and develop new ones to deliver and integrate capabilities across Exposure and Modelling. In your role as a Senior Software Engineer located in our Halifax office you will closely collaborate with the Cyber and Property Modelling teams on the insurance as well as reinsurance side and play a key role in developing AXIS’ next-generation exposure and modelling tool.

What will you do in this role?

As a Senior Software Engineer within the Exposure and Modelling Development team, you will primarily support the Property and Cyber Modelling business teams.

In your role as a senior member of the team you will be expected to take the lead on various workstreams. In practice this means that you will be expected to:

• Offer technical expertise in the form of overall solution design

• Collaborate with other adjacent IT teams such as Platform Engineering, DevOps and Data and Analytics

• Set tasks for other more junior team members and offer mentorship when needed

• Take overall responsibility for code quality and delivery of a feature through all stages from requirement setting, through to testing and final release into production

Furthermore, you will play a key role in continuing to develop a culture of software and data engineering excellence within the Exposure and Modelling Development team.  This includes embracing best practices such as submitting detailed pull requests, appropriate testing of work, peer review and thoroughly understanding user requirements.

What you need to have:

Technical Skills

• Backend development using the Microsoft/Azure stack (c#, SQL) with the proven ability to independently design and build new solutions from the ground up

• Thorough understanding of object oriented and functional programming paradigms

• Experience in source code management (git), continuous testing, and software delivery. 

• Commercial experience of industry standards, best practice, and development methodologies. 

• Real-life experience with Agile methodologies. 

• A test-driven approach to developing software

• Proficiency using AI tooling

Business Domain Skills

• An analytical mindset and the ability to reliably translate complex business domain requirements and algorithms into production ready code

• The ability to find ways to quickly and efficiently query and sense check a variety of data types to find and identify anomalies and issues

Soft Skills

• A collaborative approach to working is essential, whether at the team level, with our business customers or other teams within IT

• A natural curiosity that drives constant improvement both in terms of the technologies we use and the business problems that we’re trying to solve

What we prefer you to have:

Technical Skills

• Big Data (Databricks, Snowflake)

• Familiarity with and a passion for architectural design patterns and concepts such as Event Driven, Message Driven, Microservices and Serverless

• Front end (web technologies, JavaScript frameworks such as React and Angular)

Business Domain Knowledge

• A background in specialty insurance and reinsurance, working with exposure data and modelled loss data

• Any previous experience that proves a high level of numeracy and an eye for detail when working with data

Role Factors:

In this role, you are required to be in the office 3 days per week.

What we offer:

For this position, we currently expect to offer a base salary in the range of $80,000 - $100,000 CAD. Your salary offer will be based on an assessment of a variety of factors including your specific experience and work location.
