Job Summary
The Site Reliability Engineering team at Johnson Controls is seeking a Senior Observability Lead to build, automate, and lead a modern observability platform across applications and infrastructure. This role will own Grafana Cloud end-to-end and drive the transformation and consolidation of observability platforms onto Grafana Cloud while supporting existing Datadog environments.
The role will define observability standards, improve telemetry quality, automate platform provisioning, and implement SLIs, SLOs, SLAs, and error budgets to improve reliability, reduce alert noise, and support faster incident response across global engineering teams
Key Responsibilities
- Lead observability strategy, standards, and best practices across engineering teams
- Design, build, and manage observability solutions across metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, and alerting
- Own Grafana Cloud architecture, setup, administration, and optimization across key platform components
- Drive the transformation and consolidation of observability platforms onto Grafana Cloud while maintaining and supporting existing Datadog environments
- Support Datadog, Dynatrace, and log management platforms such as ELK or Logz.io as needed
- Define and implement SLIs, SLOs, SLAs, and error budgets to improve service reliability
- Develop monitoring and alerting strategies that reduce noise and improve signal quality
- Automate observability platform provisioning and integrations using Infrastructure as Code, APIs, and CI/CD pipelines
- Partner with application, SRE, and DevOps teams to improve instrumentation, telemetry quality, and OpenTelemetry adoption
- Provide L3 support for incidents, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis
- Ensure compliance with security, operational, and ITIL process standards
- Maintain documentation, share knowledge, and mentor teams on observability practices
Required Skills & Qualifications
8+ years of experience in SRE, observability, or monitoring engineering
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, or a related technical field
- Expert-level experience with Grafana Cloud, including setup, administration, and optimization
- Hands-on experience with Datadog or Dynatrace and support for platform transformation initiatives
- Experience with log management tools such as ELK or Logz.io
- Strong experience implementing SLIs, SLOs, SLAs, and error budgets
- Hands-on experience with observability automation using Infrastructure as Code, APIs, or CI/CD pipelines
- Strong understanding of metrics, logs, traces, OpenTelemetry, and distributed system observability
- Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, and GCP, along with Kubernetes and containers
- Good knowledge of Linux, Windows, databases, SQL, and application event flows to understand what should be monitored and instrumented
- Strong communication, collaboration, and technical leadership skills across global teams
