Overview

Microsoft is a company where passionate innovators come to collaborate, envision what can be and take their careers further. This is a world of more possibilities, more innovation, more openness, and the sky is the limit thinking in a cloud-enabled world.

Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics and business intelligence. The products our portfolio include Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. Our mission is to build the data platform for the age of AI, powering a new class of data-first applications and driving a data culture.

Within Microsoft Fabric, the Azure Monitor team builds services that enable customers to monitor, detect, troubleshoot, and mitigate issues with their services through an increasingly agentic experience. Azure Monitor includes Log Analytics, Application Insights, Container Insights, Hosted Prometheus, Azure Managed Grafana, and more. Additionally, Azure Monitor is the platform upon which Microsoft Sentinel is built. We have a multi-billion-dollar business that is growing rapidly, and we run some of the world’s highest scale observability services both for Microsoft internally and for our external customers, processing over 1.5 Exabytes of logs daily and tracking over 100 billion active metrics.

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help shape the next phase of our Observability Platform.  This role offers the opportunity to work on highly distributed, mission-critical systems where engineering decisions have impact on a global scale. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will help define the future of our observability architecture by building resilient large-scale systems for observability, telemetry ingestion, stream processing, query serving, and diagnostics across Microsoft’s cloud ecosystem.  You will collaborate with engineers, architects, and partner teams across Microsoft, apply modern AI-assisted engineering practices, and contribute both through hands-on technical leadership through design reviews, operational ownership, and mentorship of others. If you enjoy solving complex systems challenges involving scale, reliability, performance, service quality, and operational excellence, this team provides a unique opportunity to make a broad and lasting impact.

We do not just value differences or different perspectives. We seek them out and invite them in so we can tap into the collective power of everyone in the company. As a result, our customers are better served.

Responsibilities

Design, build, and evolve large-scale backend services for telemetry ingestion, stream processing, storage integration, query serving, and observability workflows that deliver reliable, near real-time insights across Microsoft’s cloud ecosystem while meeting demanding requirements for scale, performance, availability, correctness, and operational excellence.
Lead architectural decisions for complex distributed systems by evaluating trade-offs across consistency, latency, throughput, design alternatives and driving solutions that balance reliability, resiliency, security, maintainability, cost efficiency, and long-term platform growth.

Apply AI-native engineering practices throughout the software development lifecycle, leveraging modern AI tools to improve productivity, code quality, test automation, operational efficiency, and engineering health while maintaining accountability for delivered solutions.

Drive engineering excellence through high-quality code reviews, robust testing strategies, automated deployment practices, security-by-design principles, and continuous improvements that enhance system reliability, scalability, and developer productivity.

Partner with engineers, architects, product managers, and data-driven stakeholders across Microsoft to define requirements, influence technical roadmaps, resolve cross-team dependencies, and deliver solutions that create measurable customer and business impact.

Act as a Designated Responsible Individual for critical services by using telemetry, automation, debugging discipline, incident reviews, and operational best practices to improve live-site health, reduce incident volume, shorten time to detection and mitigation, and continuously improve service reliability and supportability.

Mentor and support other engineers by sharing technical expertise, fostering a culture of learning and innovation, championing modern engineering practices, and helping establish technical standards that strengthen the overall platform.

  • Experience leading the design and delivery of scalable, cloud-based software solutions and influencing technical direction across projects or teams.

  • Strong foundation in distributed systems, software design, data structures, algorithms, concurrency, reliability engineering, and modern backend engineering practices.

  • Experience building reliable, highly available services with a focus on performance, observability, security, and operational excellence.

  • Experience collaborating across engineering, product, and partner teams to deliver complex technical solutions.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • Strong hands-on backend engineering and coding skills in one or more programming languages such as C#, C++, Java, Go, or Rust, with demonstrated ability to design, implement, debug, test, optimize, and maintain production-quality services in large-scale distributed environments.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply AI-assisted engineering practices responsibly to improve developer productivity, reduce repetitive toil, automate engineering or operational workflows, strengthen software quality, and accelerate delivery of production services.

  • Experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems that process high-volume data, telemetry, observability, messaging, or real-time analytics workloads.

  • Experience designing, building, or operating services on Microsoft Azure or similar cloud platforms, using technologies such as AKS, Service Fabric, Event Hubs, Azure Storage, or equivalent distributed platform components.

  • Experience influencing technical direction across teams, mentoring engineers, and driving architecture for complex backend systems.
