We are committed to your long-term growth. We invest in you through:
  • Cutting-Edge AI Tooling: We equip our engineers to innovate at speed. You'll have full access to GitHub Copilot, frontier models (like Claude and OpenAI), Gemini, and other new tools as they emerge, all supported by our dedicated internal AI team.
  • Continuous Learning: Sharpen your skills with full access to the entire Udemy learning database.
  • Internal Mentorship: Learn from experts across our global team through tech demos, pair programming, and collaborative projects.
  • Clear Advancement: We provide a framework for you to grow from one role to the next, with clear expectations and support from your manager.

What is special about this role?

The Helix Experience Team is responsible for the software platform and user experiences that supports our Participants, Providers, and Research Administrators throughout their genetics journey. We guide users from initial enrollment in our research program, through sample processing in our lab, to the return of their results and shape comprehension of their genetic outcomes. Our team works closely with Design, User Experience, Life Sciences, Bioinformatics, Data Engineering, and Solutions teams to build and maintain the software and infrastructure necessary to provide an industry-leading experience.

As a Senior Software Engineer II, you will:

  • Lead projects from scoping through implementation to successful outcomes — not just output, but real impact for the business and users.
  • Strategically delegate implementation to AI agents, translate technical direction into precise instructions, critically evaluate AI-generated output for production-readiness, and maintain audit-ready compliance in a regulated environment
  • Explore and champion new AI tools, frameworks, and workflows; document pros/cons, best practices, and pitfalls; and create reusable prompt templates or context frameworks that elevate the entire team's AI fluency.
  • Design and implement software systems for our genomic applications and services, delivering well-tested, performant, and reliable solutions that consider the full lifecycle of a project (including on-call).
  • Take ownership of services and significant areas of the codebase, developing deep domain expertise and serving as a go-to technical resource for your team.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, designers, user experience researchers, scientists, and business leaders to drive meaningful outcomes.
  • Proactively identify and address technical debt before it becomes a long-term problem, and encourage and enable your team to do the same.
  • Mentor engineers within your team and contribute to improving engineering practices, with growing influence beyond your immediate team.
  • Contribute to setting technical standards and participate in decision-making that affects teams beyond your direct sphere of influence.

About you:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or 6+ years of equivalent professional experience as a Software Engineer.
  • Proficiency with distributed systems built on cloud infrastructure — AWS, GCP, Azure, or similar.
  • Strong backend engineering expertise with proficiency in an established back-end language (Go, Java, Python, Scala, Rust, etc.).
  • Solid understanding of software engineering best practices including testing, code review, CI/CD, and observability.
  • Demonstrated ability to take a nebulous project, scope it, determine a solution and course of action, and implement and launch it with minimal external guidance.
  • A strong product engineering mindset with a clear focus on customer and business outcomes.
  • Experience mentoring other engineers and a track record of elevating the practices of those around you.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tooling/frameworks (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, AWS CDK).
  • Familiarity with database design, data manipulation, and data quality techniques.
  • Adaptable in a fast-paced startup environment where priorities may change quickly and frequently.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn new domains (e.g., genomics, healthcare) and associated technologies.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.

Pluses:

  • Familiarity with frontend frameworks such as React, Next.js, Vue.js, or similar.
  • Familiarity with regulated software systems in any industry (e.g., HIPAA, ISO, FDA).
  • Familiarity and experience developing and architecting event-driven architectures.
  • Experience with AWS technologies and serverless infrastructure.
  • Experience with machine learning or AI technologies, including LLMs.
  • Experience in the life sciences/pharmaceutical industry.
