So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions - to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we've embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.
Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes - large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We're building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.
The Role
We're looking for a Senior Designer to join Square. The role reports into the Sales, Partnerships, and Hardware team, and will be focused on improving the seller experience across packaging and retail.
Exceptional design is at the core of Square. And as a senior designer, you'll be critical in connecting sellers to Square hardware and its entire ecosystem at both pre- and post-purchase moments. You'll be a critical leader in defining hardware packaging, in-store retail experiences, and third-party retail in all markets.
This is a hands-on creative leadership role with a lot of opportunity to influence our packaging and retail creative. You will be at the heart of co-creating on-strategy ideas and bringing them to life. You'll be asked to connect dots, organize thoughts, and develop plans to match the teams' expectations. You will lead projects from concept through execution, QA, iteration, and maintenance throughout its lifespan.
You're conceptual, strategic, and kind. You can share and sell your ideas, and you encourage others to share theirs. You sweat the smallest details, understand what it takes to develop great design, excel in cross-discipline collaboration, and have a passion for inspiring team members.
You Will
- Own the packaging and retail workflow from concept to creation, working alongside copywriters, product marketing managers, production, retail program managers, and other stakeholders to deliver work that connects sellers to Square.
- Develop a point of view and strategy around Square's retail presence and packaging, helping to push new innovations and evolve our footprint in physical stores and when our product hits a seller's doorstep.
- Become a product expert for both Square hardware and software, understanding how these things work and the benefits they bring to our sellers.
- Learn the seller journey and the nuances that journey brings to our work both in the packaging and retail space.
- Understand market nuances and demands, while pushing for the best design solutions.
- Approach small, routine updates that come with any print channel and view them holistically, identifying ways to uplevel our work and save our sellers time.
- Find intuitive, elegant, and brand-right solutions, crafting experiences that not only resonate with our existing audience, but also those who don't know Square yet.
- Integrate new technologies, solutions, and practices into these legacy spaces, helping to shape our interactive and video experiences for in store.
- Own the development and creation process, managing your time across the two areas, and prioritizing accordingly.
- Leverage AI to design, automate, scale, and innovate every chance you get.
- Seek feedback on your work, build consensus among your team, and bring stakeholders along with your recommendations.
- Get to know the Square brand, know when to push against it and when to pare back.
- Set a high bar for design and be a mentor and sounding board for other designers and writers.
- Be responsible for scope beyond packaging and retail; you'll help craft strategy for the organization, and pitch in and ideate on work from the other parts of the team.
- Build strong relationships with stakeholders from across the organization, and make critical decisions with little to no oversight.
You Have
- 8+ years of experience as a designer with specific focus in packaging and retail displays.
- Advanced design and storytelling skills, covering multiple formats and channels - you love print but you also like to dabble in interactive and video.
- A working knowledge of production and asset creation in print, digital and video workflows
- Experience working with designers, program managers, product managers, product marketers, and third-party vendors
- The ability to apply consumer insights and metrics to inform design decisions and influence company-wide strategy
- A design to art direct and learn new things.
- Have familiarity with and curiosity in using AI tools to influence strategy, scale processes and assist with execution
- A lot of curiosity, a desire to take risks, learn, and improve.
- Please include a portfolio of your work in order to be considered
