At Medtronic you can begin a life-long career of exploration and innovation, while helping champion healthcare access and equity for all. You’ll lead with purpose, breaking down barriers to innovation in a more connected, compassionate world.

A Day in the LifeAt Medtronic, we push the limits of what technology can do to make tomorrow better than yesterday and that makes it an exciting and rewarding place to work. We value what makes you unique. Be a part of a company that thinks differently to solve problems, make progress, and deliver meaningful innovations.
The Structural Heart and Aortic operating unit offer minimally invasive approaches to restore proper structure and function of the heart and the aorta. We focus on the transcatheter replacement or repair of the four heart valves – aortic, pulmonic, mitral, tricuspid – and the placement of stent grafts to treat aneurysms and dissections of the body’s largest artery, the aorta.
Within the Structural Heart and Aortic R&D organization, the Modeling & Simulation and Reliability group develops and execute multi-disciplinary models to assess design risk and ensure device and system reliability and safety. We build fundamental understanding and provide insights for design decisions by building robust performance predictions. This is a very exciting time for this organization as we focus on expanding our product portfolio to treat more patients.
Key Technologies:
• Evolut FX TAVR system
• Harmony TPV
• Confida Guidewire
This position is in Mounds View, MN within the Structural Heart and Aortic (SHA) operating unit and requires on-site presence four days a week.  This position is not open to remote candidates.
We believe that when people from different cultures, genders, and points of view come together, innovation is the result —and everyone wins. Medtronic walks the walk, creating an inclusive culture where you can thrive.
At Medtronic, we bring bold ideas forward with speed and decisiveness to put patients first in everything we do. In-person exchanges are invaluable to our work. We are working onsite a minimum of 4 days per week as part of our commitment to fostering a culture of professional growth and cross-functional collaboration as we work together to engineer the extraordinary. This role will require less than 10% of travel to enhance collaboration and ensure successful completion of projects.

A Day in the Life

In general, the following responsibilities apply for the Senior Engineer.  This includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Collaborate with cross functional team to execute a modeling and simulation strategy for design optimization and evaluating reliability of Structural Heart and Aortic devices

  • Develop predictive engineering tools, techniques, and approaches to support the product development process

  • Execute modeling & simulation studies to assess stress/strain magnitudes and distributions in implant components

  • Virtual design and prototyping of new transcatheter heart valves, using expertise in non-linear finite element software tools to incorporate large deformation, complex multibody contact, dynamic impact, modal analysis and multiaxial cyclic fatigue failure modes

  • Interpretation of complex in-vivo loading modes derived from patient imaging and mathematical conversion to Finite Element Analysis boundary conditions. Research into realistic device-anatomy interaction simulations including reconstruction of patient anatomies into meshed FEA models

  • Application of CFD or FSI software tools to predict flow conditions in the vicinity of implanted bioprosthetic heart valves

The Successful candidate will have:

  • Strong technical aptitude with a deep understanding of the finite element method, and its application using commercially available software packages, and a strong understanding of fundamental engineering principles in mechanics and/or CFD and FSI.

  • Experience in the application of the principles of fatigue analysis for metals including superelastic and shape memory alloys. Simulation of highly deformed metals, polymers, fabrics, biological tissue and pulsatile flow conditions

  • Demonstrated proactive creation of novel algorithms and scripts to automate post-process finite element output databases

  • Exposure to the development of novel model validation experiments and analogous finite element modeling, and development of material testing protocols to calibrate constitutive models, as well as FEA model validation. Development of hydrodynamic testing protocols (e.g. PIV) to facilitate validation of CFD and/or FSI models

  • Familiarity with the application of the principles of ASME VVUQ10, 20 & 40 to drive model credibility. Has prepared detailed modeling and simulation engineering reports to support product design characterization and verification, for example in direct support of new product regulatory submissions
