R&D MV Drives Power Electronics and Components Team Lead


 

Your role and responsibilities
In this role, you will play a pivotal part in leading technology and product development projects by identifying, proposing, and implementing innovative solutions for Medium Voltage (MV) Power Electronic Drives. You will serve as a key technical contact for R&D activities, ensuring proficiency, quality, and a customer-focused approach throughout the development process. Additionally, you will contribute to intellectual property creation and promote knowledge sharing within ABB’s global R&D network, enhancing our position as a technology leader.

The work model for the role is: hybrid #LI-hybrid

This role is contributing to the Medium Voltage System Drives, Motion High Power Division, in Untersiggenthal, Switzerland.

You will be mainly accountable for:

  • Coordinating system-level design, specification, and qualification of MV frequency converter components and subsystems, while collaborating across functions (product management, engineering, supply chain) and representing the team in technical forums.
  • Applying advanced simulation and modeling techniques to optimize converter performance, quality, and reliability, and overseeing hardware design and validation in MV lab environments, including qualification testing.
  • Documenting designs, findings, and test reports to enable reuse and continuous improvement, while enhancing team skills by integrating the latest developments in power electronics technologies, tools, and methodologies.
  • Contributing to intellectual property generation and project IP strategy development, ensuring innovation and technical leadership in your area of specialization.

Qualifications for the role

  • You hold a Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Power Electronics and Medium Voltage applications.
  • You have demonstrated proficiency in simulation, modelling, and system-level design of converter drives and hardware.
  • You show keen interest and practical experience in lab testing and experimental validation of power converter systems.
  • You are experienced in programming languages such as MATLAB and demonstrate flexibility in learning new tools and technologies.
  • You are familiar with relevant standards for Medium Voltage drive systems.
  • You are fluent in English; additionally in German.
  • You are available for occasional travel.
