Senior Quality Test Engineer I
Do you enjoy building robust test automation frameworks for security-critical, distributed systems?
Would you like to shape quality engineering across functional, integration, end-to-end, and non-functional testing for a platform that authenticates millions of researchers and healthcare professionals worldwide?
About the team:
You will join the Identity & Access Management team, which owns the authentication and authorisation infrastructure underpinning Elsevier’s global product suite. We build and operate a highly available identity platform that integrates with multiple identity providers, entitlement services, and downstream APIs, running on AWS ECS and EKS.
Quality engineering within the team covers automated testing of OAuth 2.0 and OIDC flows, REST APIs, cross-service integrations, and system performance. You will collaborate with developers, architects, and platform engineers to improve the correctness, reliability, security, and scalability of the identity platform.
You will also use AI-assisted tools, where appropriate, to accelerate test authoring, coverage analysis, and defect investigation.
About the role:
You will partner with the development team to define and execute a comprehensive quality strategy covering functional, integration, and performance testing for a distributed identity and access management platform.
You will build and maintain automation frameworks using Playwright and REST Assured, write API tests for OAuth 2.0 and OIDC endpoints, design performance-testing scenarios using tools such as JMeter/k6, and integrate automated test execution into GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines running on AWS infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and implement end-to-end and functional test automation for OAuth 2.0 and OIDC authentication flows, token-exchange endpoints, entitlement APIs, and administrative operations, using Playwright with TypeScript for browser-based flows and REST Assured with Java for API-layer testing.
Build automation frameworks from scratch or extend existing frameworks, taking ownership of framework health, test reliability, maintainability, and CI integration.
Drive appropriate automation coverage across the services and products delivered by the team.
Define and execute non-functional testing, including performance, load, stress, and spike testing, using tools such as JMeter and k6.
Interpret performance results and correlate findings with observability platforms such as New Relic, Amazon CloudWatch, and Grafana.
Evaluate testing tools and lead initiatives that improve testing capability, engineering efficiency, and quality practices.
Report test results and defects, perform root-cause analysis, and clearly document findings.
Ensure that test coverage aligns with agreed requirements, acceptance criteria, and stakeholder expectations.
Use AI-assisted tools to accelerate test-scenario authoring, improve coverage, generate stubs, and analyse large test-output datasets.
Validate microservice API contracts, response schemas, and error handling across distributed system boundaries.
Work with Terraform-managed infrastructure and Keycloak realm configurations to understand how configuration changes affect system behaviour and test coverage.
Participate in pull-request reviews with a quality and testability perspective, identifying coverage gaps, highlighting test-unfriendly designs, and contributing to engineering standards.
Collaborate with developers, architects, platform engineers, and stakeholders to improve product quality and system testability.
Requirements:
5+ years of Quality Test Engineering experience with bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or equivalent experience in a computer-related discipline with strong attention to detail and efficient testing approaches.
Demonstrated ownership of overall product quality and experience driving quality practices across functional, integration, end-to-end, and non-functional testing, including performance and accessibility testing.
Strong analytical and root-cause analysis skills, with the ability to distinguish test-design issues from genuine system defects in complex, distributed environments.
Strong experience creating, maintaining, and enhancing test automation frameworks.
Experience using Playwright with TypeScript or JavaScript for browser-based, end-to-end, and API testing.
Strong API test automation experience using REST Assured with Java, or equivalent API-testing libraries.
Experience writing and maintaining automated test suites for REST APIs.
Understanding of OAuth 2.0 and OIDC, sufficient to develop accurate functional tests for authorisation code flows, token exchange, token refresh, and token introspection endpoints.
Experience using performance and load-testing tools such as JMeter or k6. Ability to design realistic, multi-step performance scenarios, interpret results, and distinguish structural system issues from situational or environmental failures.
Experience with GitHub Actions, including authoring multi-job workflows, implementing environment-specific logic, managing secrets, and integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines.
Hands-on experience with cloud platforms, preferably AWS.
Proficiency in TypeScript or JavaScript and Java for test framework development and maintenance.
Experience using mock and stub tools to isolate services under test from live dependencies.
Strong knowledge of quality engineering methodologies, including test strategy, test-case design, defect management, risk-based testing, and acceptance-criteria coverage.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
Good to Have
Experience using AI-assisted development tools, such as Claude, GitHub Copilot, or Codex, for test authoring, stub generation, coverage analysis, or test-output investigation.
Experience treating AI-assisted tools as productivity accelerators within a quality engineering workflow while maintaining appropriate review and validation practices.
Familiarity with Keycloak or another identity provider, including realm configuration, authentication flows, and OIDC client setup.
Experience with Terraform or another infrastructure-as-code tool, including the ability to read infrastructure definitions and understand how configuration changes affect system behaviour and test coverage.
Experience with WireMock, including response templating, transformers, and the design of stub payloads that accurately reflect production response structures.
Experience working with Docker and Kubernetes.
