Job Type:
PermanentBuild a brilliant future with Hiscox
Member of the Hiscox US Data Engineering practice
Position: Senior Quality Engineer
Reporting to: Director of Data Engineering
Location: Atlanta, New York, Chicago, West Hartford, Boston (Hybrid – Remote/Office)
The Role:
You will bring your specialist knowledge of quality engineering to our US Data Engineering chapter. You will take an automation-first approach to ensure the quality of our team’s work. You will shift left to truly understand our stakeholders’ needs and act as their voice in the development process.
What You’ll Be Doing:
Engaging with our stakeholders at the earliest possible stage to understand what they need from our data applications.
Together with our product owners converting those needs into unambiguous and testable requirements.
Developing automated tests to ensure our code delivers to those requirements and regression is not introduced by future development.
Building, expanding and improving automation frameworks to ensure our testing is effective and efficient.
Collaborating with data engineers in your squad to help them deliver quality code, and with quality engineers across the practice to ensure our test coverage is coherent and comprehensive.
Participating in code reviews for data and quality engineers with a continuous improvement mindset.
Balancing a meticulous attention to detail where it matters with a risk-based approach to ensure we deliver quality outcomes at high velocity.
Building a culture of quality where everyone takes ownership of producing quality outputs in a psychologically safe environment.
Essential Skills:
Confidence, ability and desire to shift left and truly understand what quality means for our business.
Deep familiarity with behavior-driven-development approaches including the Cucumber/Gherkin syntax for test scenarios
Experience working using a modern test automation approach. You will be an SDET who writes code to ensure quality outcomes.
Excellent knowledge of and proven experience with Python testing frameworks particularly pytest.
Good knowledge of SQL and ideally of dbt.
Hands-on experience working with modern cloud data lakehouse technologies e.g. Databricks (preferred) or Snowflake.
Experience collaborating with technical and non-technical team members in agile Scrum ceremonies – roadmap planning, feature workshops, backlog elaboration, code review.
Desirable Skills:
Beyond the required skills we are open to individuals of diverse talents. Experience with additional technologies, data science knowledge or an insurance background are all valued. We want to know how your unique abilities can contribute to our team.
Our Technology:
We operate in a diverse technical landscape and are looking for flexible engineers who can adapt to and use many different tools. We would not expect any engineer to be familiar with the entire tech stack – no engineer can. Instead, we seek people with a good understanding of data structures and algorithms and the ability to apply this knowledge in learning new tools.
We have built a modern cloud data platform to realise the full value of our data. It is based on Databricks and use dbt for transformation. We surface data for use by analysts working primarily in PowerBI.
We use pytest for unit testing and would like to expand to using it for end-to-end testing with a BDD approach. Much of our business logic is in dbt so we use built in components and extensions to ensure quality there. We use Azure Pipelines to integrate our testing with our CI/CD.
Our technology landscape is not complete. Our engineering teams will be able and required to help us build out our technology stack to fill gaps and embrace new opportunities.
What We Offer:
Competitive salary and bonus (based on personal & company performance)
401(k) with competitive company matching
Comprehensive health insurance, vision, dental and FSA plans (medical, limited purpose, and dependent care)
Company paid group term life, short- term disability and long-term disability coverage

Spirit of volunteerism, social responsibility and community involvement, including matching charitable donations for qualifying non-profits via our sister non-profit company, the Hiscox USA Foundation
Salary: $120-$160k
The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment.
**Please note that this position is hybrid and requires two (2) days in our office weekly**
