The Role
Senior Product Engineer responsible for shaping product roadmaps and delivering scalable full-stack web applications. Builds accessible React interfaces, GraphQL APIs, Node.js microservices, cloud deployments, and automated tests. Owns outcomes, conducts discovery, optimizes performance and security, and collaborates with cross-functional teams. The role also involves extending AI-assisted development tooling, designing event-driven systems, documenting technical solutions, and making independent decisions in an evolving engineering practice.

The Senior Product Engineer helps decide what we build, not just how we build it. This is a senior engineering role at its foundation. You design, develop, and deploy scalable web applications end to end, and you meet a high bar for engineering craft. You also own the product: you shape what we build, influence what goes on the roadmap, and are measured by the outcomes your work produces rather than the tickets you close. You explore before you commit, propose the work as often as you receive it, and sharpen requirements rather than simply implement them.

You will build accessible user interfaces, implement robust back-end microservices, and integrate the two with GraphQL, all while exercising considerable latitude over technical approach. Strong product instinct here does not lower the engineering bar; it raises the overall one.

How We Work

We work in an agent-accelerated, skills-driven engineering practice. Our engineers use AI coding tools like Claude Code as a core part of daily development. They also build and maintain the shared skills and tooling that make that workflow effective, rather than only consuming what someone else set up. You will extend your environment, not just operate inside it.

This is an emerging practice, not a settled playbook. The line between product and engineering is blurring, and on this team you will help establish how that works rather than inherit a finished process. If building a new way of working sounds like the reason to take the job rather than a source of uncertainty, you are the person we are looking for.

Responsibilities
  • Shape what we build: Propose and challenge what goes on the roadmap, not just how it gets implemented. Turn a rough problem into a defined piece of work, write the stories yourself, and sharpen requirements rather than waiting for them to arrive fully formed.
  • Own outcomes: Measure success by the impact your work has (adoption, accessibility, performance, reliability), not by the number of tickets closed. Set and pursue the outcomes that matter for the products you own.
  • Explore before committing: Run discovery, spikes, and prototypes to test whether something is the right thing to build before investing in a full implementation
  • Stay close to the problem: Engage directly with users and stakeholders to understand the problems behind the requests, when access to them allows; carry what you learn back into the work
  • End-to-end delivery: Independently design, develop, and deploy full-stack applications, including accessible UIs, GraphQL APIs, and Node.js-based microservices, ensuring seamless integration across all layers
  • Accessible UI development: Build responsive, WCAG 2.2-compliant user interfaces with accessibility as a first-class concern, including semantic HTML, ARIA, keyboard navigation, and screen reader testing
  • Performance and security: Optimize application performance (e.g., lazy loading, code splitting, query complexity analysis) and implement security best practices (e.g., OAuth2, JWT, input validation)
  • Test-driven development: Follow TDD principles to write comprehensive unit, integration, and end-to-end tests. Engineering rigor is non-negotiable regardless of how fast the tooling lets us move.
  • Microservices architecture: Architect and implement scalable, domain-driven microservices with Node.js, adhering to modern best practices such as API-first design and cloud-native principles
  • GraphQL expertise: Design and develop efficient GraphQL services, including schema design, query optimization (e.g., batching, caching), and integration with front-end and back-end systems
  • Cloud integration: Deploy and manage applications on cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, GCP, or AWS), leveraging container technologies (e.g., Docker or Kubernetes) for scalability and resilience
  • Extend our tooling: Build and maintain the AI-accelerated development skills and tooling the team relies on, improving how we all work rather than only using what exists
  • Collaboration: Partner with cross-functional Agile teams, including designers, product managers, and other engineers, to deliver impactful technical solutions that align with business goals
  • Documentation: Maintain clear, comprehensive technical documentation for APIs, microservices, and front-end components to support team collaboration and future maintenance

Use your skills to make an impact

Required QualificationsEducational Background
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent professional experience
Professional Experience
  • Product and technical ownership: Demonstrated ownership of product or technical direction, not just execution. You have shaped what to build, influenced a roadmap, or turned ambiguous problems into shipped outcomes, not only delivered assigned tickets. This is what distinguishes the role from a strong individual-contributor position.
  • Full-stack development: Minimum of 5 years of experience in software engineering, with at least 3 years focused on full-stack web development
  • UI frameworks: At least 2 years of hands-on experience with React (including hooks, state management, and component architecture), with additional exposure to Vue.js, Next.js, or Lit preferred given our multi-framework portfolio
  • Web accessibility: Strong working knowledge of WCAG 2.2 success criteria, semantic HTML, ARIA patterns, and assistive technology testing (e.g., NVDA, VoiceOver, axe), with proven experience integrating accessibility into the development workflow rather than as a post-hoc audit
  • GraphQL: Minimum of 2 years designing and implementing GraphQL APIs using Apollo Server, including schema design, resolver optimization, and integration with front-end and back-end systems
  • Node.js: At least 2 years of experience developing back-end services with Node.js
  • Microservices: At least 1 year of experience building and deploying microservices in a production environment
  • Test-driven development: Proven experience applying TDD to deliver high-quality, testable code using frameworks such as Vitest, Jest, or Playwright
  • AI-accelerated development: You treat AI as a force multiplier for your work and can critically evaluate and refactor what it produces. You own the output, not the tool. Hands-on experience with AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor) is a strong plus, but the disposition matters more than time spent with any specific tool: eagerness to work agentically, sound judgment about where AI helps and where it doesn't, and a habit of improving the tooling you work with.
  • DevOps: Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and tools like Azure DevOps, Jenkins, or GitHub Actions
Technical Skills
  • Strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, and CSS
  • Knowledge of front-end performance optimization techniques (e.g., lazy loading, code splitting, caching)
  • Understanding of RESTful APIs, OpenAPI specifications, and GraphQL best practices
  • Experience interacting with databases, both SQL (e.g., PostgreSQL, SQL Server) and NoSQL (e.g., MongoDB, DynamoDB) varieties
  • Experience with event streaming (e.g., Apache Kafka), including writing producers and consumers in a production environment
  • Experience with cloud platforms, with Azure strongly preferred, GCP as a plus, and AWS experience considered
  • Familiarity with containerization tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes basics)
Soft Skills
  • Ability to work independently and make sound technical decisions with incomplete information
  • Communicates clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, in writing and in person
  • Gives and receives constructive feedback in code reviews and design discussions
  • Comfortable operating without a settled playbook; you bring structure to ambiguity rather than waiting for it to be resolved for you
Preferred Qualifications
  • TanStack: Working familiarity with TanStack Query or TanStack Router
  • Micro-frontend architecture: Experience with Module Federation for building and consuming micro-frontend applications, including authoring shared modules and managing cross-app dependencies
  • Advanced GraphQL: Experience with Apollo Federation or optimizing GraphQL performance in large-scale systems
  • Python: Familiarity with Python and FastAPI for building lightweight microservices
  • Performance monitoring: Hands-on experience with performance monitoring and optimization tools (e.g., Dynatrace, Prometheus, Grafana)
  • Cloud certification: Microsoft Azure Developer, AWS Certified Developer, or equivalent
  • Healthcare experience: Familiarity with healthcare industry standards (e.g., HIPAA, FHIR) and building secure, compliant applications
  • Building AI-powered features: Experience integrating LLMs or AI APIs into production applications. Note this is distinct from AI-accelerated coding above: it is about shipping AI capabilities to users, a genuine plus for someone who will help shape AI-powered products.

Work at Home Requirements: To ensure Home or Hybrid Home/Office employees’ ability to work effectively, the self-provided internet service of Home or Hybrid Home/Office employees must meet the following criteria: At minimum, a download speed of 25 Mbps and an upload speed of 10 Mbps is required; wireless, wired cable or DSL connection is suggested. In certain roles, the minimum recommended internet speed required by Humana may not be sufficient for business needs. Humana reserves the right to require associates to upgrade their internet service if necessary. Work from a dedicated space lacking ongoing interruptions to protect member PHI / HIPAA information.
Travel: While this is a remote position, occasional travel to Humana's offices for training or meetings may be required.
