Optum is a global organization that delivers care, aided by technology to help millions of people live healthier lives. The work you do with our team will directly improve health outcomes by connecting people with the care, pharmacy benefits, data and resources they need to feel their best. Here, you will find a culture guided by inclusion, talented peers, comprehensive benefits and career development opportunities. Come make an impact on the communities we serve as you help us advance health optimization on a global scale. Join us to start Caring. Connecting. Growing together.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Drive the comprehensive strategy for security, privacy, and trust across all identity products, platform services, and ecosystem integrations
  • Partner closely with anti-fraud and security teams to analyze attack vectors and translate those insights into scalable, proactive architectural designs
  • Architect the bridge between human and non-human identities (NHI) to enable secure governance of agents and digital workers, agnostic of the sponsoring IdP (e.g., workforce vs. consumer)
  • Ensure the entire platform and its products are built on the latest open standards (OAuth2, OIDC, FIDO) and privacy-by-design principles
  • Lead the technical evolution of the platform to support secure healthcare data interoperability, minimizing user friction for "good" users while maximizing threat protection
  • Proactively identify and mitigate emerging means of abuse by integrating advanced fraud prevention directly into the core architecture
  • Use enterprise-approved AI tools to streamline solution design, automate complex engineering tasks, and drive continuous platform improvement
  • Evaluate emerging trends in cybersecurity, identity, and autonomous systems to inform long-term strategic innovation and ecosystem resilience
  • Comply with the terms and conditions of the employment contract, company policies and procedures, and any and all directives (such as, but not limited to, transfer and/or re-assignment to different work locations, change in teams and/or work shifts, policies in regards to flexibility of work benefits and/or work environment, alternative work arrangements, and other decisions that may arise due to the changing business environment). The Company may adopt, vary or rescind these policies and directives in its absolute discretion and without any limitation (implied or otherwise) on its ability to do so

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; advanced degree preferred
  • 15+ years of experience in software engineering, with a strong focus on identity, security, and distributed systems architecture
  • Experience designing secure, scalable enterprise platforms, preferably within healthcare or other highly regulated industries
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and microservices-based architectures
  • Experience leveraging AI/ML tools or automation platforms to enhance engineering productivity and system resilience
  • Deep expertise in identity and access management (IAM), authentication/authorization protocols (OAuth2, OIDC, SAML), and modern passwordless standards such as FIDO
  • Solid understanding of cybersecurity principles, fraud prevention strategies, and privacy-by-design frameworks
  • Familiarity with non-human identities (NHI), service accounts, bots, and agent-based systems security
  • Proven solid collaboration skills with the ability to influence cross-functional teams including security, product, and engineering leadership
  • Proven excellent problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder management skills

At UnitedHealth Group, our mission is to help people live healthier lives and make the health system work better for everyone. We believe everyone-of every race, gender, sexuality, age, location and income-deserves the opportunity to live their healthiest life. Today, however, there are still far too many barriers to good health which are disproportionately experienced by people of color, historically marginalized groups and those with lower incomes. We are committed to mitigating our impact on the environment and enabling and delivering equitable care that addresses health disparities and improves health outcomes - an enterprise priority reflected in our mission.

Skills Required

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • 15+ years of experience in software engineering, focusing on identity, security, and distributed systems architecture
  • Experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and microservices-based architectures
  • Deep expertise in identity and access management (IAM) and authentication/authorization protocols
  • Solid understanding of cybersecurity principles and fraud prevention strategies
  • Proven collaboration skills with cross-functional teams
