Position Summary:

The Value Chain Optimization (VCO) team is seeking a Planning & Optimization Engineer to guide the transformation of MPC’s planning processes. Reporting to VCO, you will collaborate with leadership, Commercial IT, business partners, refining teams, and external consultants. Your objective is to deliver an integrated planning framework that maximizes enterprise value capture & ensures consistency across MPC’s asset footprint. 

This position can be based at any MPC office location.

This position is part of a job progression with multiple grade levels. The successful candidate will be placed at a level commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drives standardization across MPC’s planning models & processes, as well as consistency across other VCO transformation efforts

  • Develops processes and methods to maximize value capture for feedstock selection, refinery product mix, blending, logistics, buy versus make, sales, and inventory.

  • Aligns planning models & processes with financial forecasting for cohesive decision-making.

  • Collaborates with the VCO Scheduling team to align planning forecasts with executable schedules.

  • Leverages technical expertise and business experience to enhance collaboration and buy-in across the footprint to enable initiative execution.

  • Possesses a deep understanding of refinery processes and commercial implications. Capable of analyzing complex data, identifying trends, and proposing solutions autonomously.

  • Understands planning deliverables at the local level; recognizes how APS is leveraged to coordinate local refinery material balances and understands how to optimize refinery operating plans.

  • Understands and has the capability to perform all routine planning functions, from feedstock evaluations, to cost of production evaluations. 

  • Demonstrates an advanced understanding of refinery operations, economics, and market dynamics for multiple refineries. Able to mentor junior engineers in planning and optimization strategies.

  • Has the capability of managing the commercial aspects of regional refinery operations, including feedstock selection, product and intermediate placement, supply chain optimization, and market analysis.

  • Understands how regional plans for multiple refineries are developed, optimized, and executed for multiple refineries using linear programming simulation models. Can modify production plans to respond to demand/margin changes. Knows how to modify modeling constraints to match real life refinery & logistics operating constraints.

  • Has the capability of leading end-to-end evaluation of buy-or-make cases, from data gathering to final recommendation, as well as develop sophisticated economic models and sensitivity analyses to assess risk and uncertainty. Can effectively communicate signals from economic models to trading & refining workstreams to capture identified values.

  • Has the capability to develop and execute economic model backcasting, considering factors such as production efficiency, cost drivers, and market conditions. Also, can conduct in-depth root cause analysis to identify factors influencing historical performance deviations. Able to implement corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Understands how to communicate executable operating strategies for compliance with monthly operating plans and changing economics.

Education and Experience:

Senior Planning & Optimization Engineer

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required.

  • Seven (7) years of relevant experience required. Experience working with LP models (PIMS), exposure to Finance, as well as refining and midstream operations preferred.

  • Proven leadership in driving process improvements and managing cross-functional teams.

Lead Planning & Optimization Engineer

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required.

  • Ten (10) years of relevant experience required. Experience working with LP models (PIMS), exposure to Finance, as well as refining and midstream operations preferred.
