The best jobs have always clustered in a handful of the world's wealthiest cities. But talent is everywhere. Oyster set out to close that gap - building a global employment platform that lets companies hire, pay, and care for brilliant people anywhere.
We're proof that a high-performing culture doesn't need an office. Distributed across 60+ countries since 2020, we've built something the industry keeps noticing:
Ranked #10 of 250 on TIME and Statista's 2026 list of America's Top WorkTech Companies
Named one of America's Greatest Startup Workplaces 2026 by Newsweek
A G2 Spring 2026 Leader across Employer of Record, Global Employment, Multi-country Payroll, and HR Compliance
The only B Corp-certified global employment platform ~ independently verified since 2023
Two of those rankings measured our business impact from the outside. One measured how our own people feel about working here. They landed in the same place ~ because at Oyster, culture and performance aren't separate conversations. They're the same one.
And we're just getting started. If you want to do the best work of your career alongside people who care as much as you do, we'd love for you to apply.
Location: To create the best experience for this employee and meet business needs, this role requires you to be based in the Netherlands and have the right to work in this location.
Role SummaryThis is an exciting time to join Oyster. The Netherlands is one of our most important markets and this role will give you real ownership over how payroll runs, with the scope to help us achieve best-in-class payroll standards at scale.
You'll be our lead in-house payroll expert: the person we trust to own Dutch payroll end-to-end, build scalable workflows in AFAS, Nmbrs by Visma and / or Loket.nl, and set the standard for how payroll should run. If you've run native Dutch payroll from the ground up, know AFAS Nmbrs by Visma and/or Loket.nl inside out, have strong opinions on doing payroll right, and have helped build or transform a payroll function before, this role is built for you.
Core ResponsibilitiesRun payroll end-to-end. Own the full Dutch payroll cycle in-house; accurate, compliant, and on time.
Master data ownership. Oversee the validation of employee payroll master data; new hires, terminations, salary changes, variable pay, benefits, absences, and garnishments (loonbeslag), ensuring every change is processed accurately and within payroll deadlines.
Payroll controls & quality. Run rigorous pre- and post-payroll validations each cycle, investigate discrepancies, and implement corrective actions to keep payroll accurate before issues reach team members, customers or Finance.
Handle all statutory filings & accesses. Loonaangifte (monthly payroll tax) and Jaaropgave (annual statement) — you own the Belastingdienst submissions. You will also be responsible for setting up and managing required government accesses (Belastingdienst, UWV).
Own the payroll system. Configure and maintain the in-house payroll system, test legislative updates before they go live, troubleshoot issues, and partner with our Product team to improve automation and scalability.
Be the subject matter expert. Advise the business on Loonheffing (payroll tax), Sociale verzekeringen (social insurance), Dutch arbeidsrecht (labour law), 30% ruling applications and CAO (collective labour agreement) interpretation.
Own the numbers. Oversee payroll journals, GL mappings, reconciliations with Finance, and full data integrity.
Own complex escalations. Be the key point of contact for our most complex client payroll issues. Pair your deep technical expertise with a customer-first mindset to turn hard problems into a best-in-class experience.
Reporting. Maintain and prepare statutory and ad-hoc reports to meet regulatory requirements, including EU Pay Transparency Directive obligations, AVG/GDPR compliance across payroll data, WKR and Ondernemingsraad (works council)-facing pay assessment documentation.
Audits. Provide structured data and documentation to support internal and external audits.
Level the team up. Improve processes, coach junior specialists through complex problems rather than solving issues for them, and back up Regional Managers when needed. Maintain a living knowledge base e.g. playbooks and SOPs. so legal updates and process knowledge stay documented and shared, never siloed.
5+ years running the complete native (in-house) payroll process for the Netherlands, comfortable independently handling a high volume of payslips per month.
Advanced, hands-on AFAS and / or Nmbrs by Visma and / or Loket.nl experience is non-negotiable.
PDL (Praktijkdiploma Loonadministratie) and/or VPS (Vakopleiding Payroll Services) certification and/or NIRPA Register Salarisadministrateur (RSa) registration; HBO (Bachelor) in Business Admin or Finance highly valued.
Deep, current working knowledge of Dutch wage tax, social insurance, and labor law, and the confidence to advise stakeholders directly, not just execute.
Dutch at C1/C2 for interaction with local authorities and fluent English for collaborating with our async global team.
Comfortable owning complex, sensitive client escalations; balancing technical precision with a genuine customer-first mindset.
An analytical, productivity-obsessed mindset. You're not a corporate "just follow the process" type; you thrive working from a blank canvas to build and set up processes, with an automation mindset that keeps improving how the work gets done.
Comfortable operating in ambiguity and driving cross-functional change, even without an established playbook.
Some experience coaching or mentoring less experienced colleagues; you like building others up, not just solving problems yourself.
Comfortable working largely asynchronously in a fast-paced, remote-first environment.
A broader accounting background or qualification (e.g. RA/AA accountancy qualification); particularly useful for the GL mapping and reconciliation side of the role.
Proven experience working on and delivering cross-functional HR/Payroll projects.
Hands-on capability working with AI tools to optimize payroll or operations workflows.
Strong data transformation skills and practical experience with data analytics platforms.

What We Do
Our mission is to create a more equal world by making it possible for companies everywhere to hire people anywhere. We believe it should be easy for any company to hire any person, no matter where either is located in the world. Now more than ever, smart companies can't allow the location of their HQ to dictate the size of their talent pool. Your next transformative hire could be anywhere. We also believe the most in-demand knowledge workers today want to leverage a global career perspective, the freedom to live where they want, and the security of full-fledged employment with benefits. But today, the flow between talent and opportunity around the globe is still blocked by the costs and legal complexity companies face before they can fully employ in another country. Cross-border hiring is still arcane, remarkably un-transformed by software, and ripe for disruption. We are also motivated by the opportunity for positive social impact. Removing these barriers makes the world a better place in three ways: 1) It helps redress inequalities of access to opportunity, 2) It allows for the distribution of wealth to places other than the major cities of the world, and 3) It supports the environmentally-friendly and business-smart shift to remote working. Our software platform is created to solve for the complexities of giving full-time, full-fledged employment to anyone in the world, while providing a delightful experience to employers and employees. With Oyster, you can hire remote full-time employees anywhere in the world, provide fully-compliant payroll, and give your valued remote hires around the world the benefits and perks they deserve. Oyster has Pending B Corporation status. Read our social impact thesis: https://www.oysterhr.com/impact-thesis
