The Role
Our Purpose
At Xero, we’re here to help you supercharge your business. We do this by automating routine tasks, surfacing actionable insights and connecting businesses with the right data, advisors and apps. When that happens, we’re not only making life better for small business, we’ll be building a stronger economy that can change the world.

About the team and role
As our Senior Payment Operations Manager, you will be responsible for setting up and leading all aspects of payment operations, fraud prevention, risk management, and compliance related to our AFSL obligations. You will work cross-functionally with Finance, Product and Engineering as well as the Enterprise Risk and Compliance teams to ensure seamless, compliant, and scalable payment operations.

This is a foundational role, offering the opportunity to design and own payment operations from the ground up. If you're a proactive, detail-oriented leader with experience in payment operations, regulatory compliance, fraud prevention, and financial services, we'd love to hear from you!

What you'll do

  • Define and operationalise scalable payment operations processing workflows to comply with AFSL requirements.
  • Establish risk management and compliance controls for payments, transactions, and financial operations.
  • Develop and maintain internal policies and procedures to meet AFSL obligations.
  • Implement and oversee fraud detection, transaction monitoring, and anti-money laundering (AML) controls.
  • Develop and manage real-time fraud prevention strategies, ensuring minimal impact on legitimate transactions.
  • Collaborate with the financial crime compliance team to ensure ongoing regulatory adherence.
  • Work closely with product and engineering to integrate compliant and secure payment operations workflows, reporting and fraud monitoring systems into our platform.
  • Oversee transaction monitoring, reconciliation, and reporting to ensure financial integrity.
  • Be involved in engagement with regulators, auditors, and banking/payment partners.
  • Scale and optimise payment operations as the function grows.
  • Build and mentor a future team as we expand payment operations.

What you'll bring with you

  • Strong experience in payment operations, fraud prevention, financial services, or fintech.
  • Strong understanding of AFSL obligations, compliance, AML, and risk management.
  • Experience implementing fraud detection systems, transaction monitoring tools, and chargeback/dispute processes.
  • Familiarity with card schemes, bank payments, and financial regulations in Australia.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • A hands-on, problem-solving approach with a growth mindset.
  • Experience in a fast-paced SaaS, fintech, or startup environment is a plus.
