We are looking for a Senior Optomechanical Engineer with a track record of working alongside physicists in experimental atomic, molecular and optical design. As a member of the Engineering and Technology team at IonQ, you’ll be part of an interdisciplinary group whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.
This is a career-level professional position at IonQ. You will be part of the team researching new technologies for future generations of our quantum computers.
Responsibilities:
- Optomechanical design, modeling, drafting assembly, and characterization of the optical components, mounts and subsystems represented in a trapped ion quantum computer
- Performing basic material, structural, thermal and tolerance analyses
- Commitment to daily, in-the-lab hands-on participation in an interdisciplinary team of engineers and physicists dedicated to the improvement of quantum computing system performance
- Educating and ability for clear communication with others regarding optomechanical architectural concerns and proposed solutions
- Commitment to prototyping, validation and refinement of design, from concept to manufacturable product
- Ownership of a complete and accurate Solidworks CAD model using PDM
- BOM generation and ECO release of parts
- Liaison to component vendors, materials suppliers, machine shops and related services
You’d be a good fit with:
- BS or MS in mechanical engineering or related field
- 5+ years of experience in design of optomechanical components, mounts, or systems.
- Experience with structural, thermal, vibration, and optical finite element analysis (FEA)
- Understanding of precision mounting of optical components
- Experience with Solidworks/PDM
- Experience working with and managing relationships with vendors, suppliers and machine shops.
- Experience and familiarity working in a hands-on scientific laboratory environment
- Experience with practical implementation of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) methods
- Working familiarity with materials and coatings employed in optics components and systems
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
You’d be a great fit with:
- 7+ years experience in transforming designs from initial concept through assembly, debug, and release to manufacture
- Experience working with lasers, optics testbeds and fiber optics
- Experience with ANSYS finite element analysis (FEA)
- Experience with actuated alignment mirrors and stages for precision optics
- Experience with ion traps, ultra-high vacuum and cryogenic system design
- Experience in the alignment of optical systems and running of optical experiments
Location: This role is based onsite at our College Park, Maryland location.
The approximate base salary range for this position is $123,191 - $161,289.
Compensation will vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Posted base salary figures are subject to change as new market data becomes available. Beyond base salary, total compensation includes a variable bonus and equity component and a range of benefit options found on our career site at ionq.co/jobs. IonQ's HQ is located in College Park, Maryland, a quick 15-minute metro from Washington DC. We are actively building out our recently opened manufacturing and production facility in Bothell, WA (near Seattle). Depending on the position, you may be required to be near one of our offices in College Park, Seattle, or Toronto. Quantum computers are a revolutionizing technology — they have the potential to transform business, society, and the planet for the better, and IonQ is at the forefront of this revolution.
After over 25 years of academic research, IonQ was founded in 2015 by Chris Monroe and Jungsang Kim with $2 million in seed funding from New Enterprise Associates, a license to core technology from the University of Maryland and Duke University, and the goal of taking trapped ion quantum computing out of the lab and into the market.
