Risk Management is a function that provides independent oversight of risk-taking and risk mitigation activities for our businesses. The Canada Risk Management team is responsible for ensuring that risk considerations are considered in all areas and processes from product development and new initiatives to front-line business objectives for our Canada Segment businesses.

This role represents an exciting opportunity to influence the evolution of a comprehensive risk management culture within Canada Segment.  Reporting to the AVP of Risk Management, the Senior Manager, Operational Risk Management, is accountable for ensuring the businesses operate within the process, risk and control requirements from the Enterprise and Operational Risk Management Frameworks. The role requires pragmatic business judgment, technical subject matter expertise in risk management, and highly effective communication and influencing skills with colleagues at various levels.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Provide second line of defense oversight of risk and control self-assessments (RCSAs) by probing and challenging assumptions, evaluating risk exposure and applying risk expertise, relationship management and critical thinking skills.

  • Recommend process and control improvements, supporting the business in developing practical, effective action plans to address identified gaps.

  • Identify, track, and monitor key risks, issues and corrective action plans in close collaboration with 1st Line and 1B partners to ensure timely and effective remediation.

  • Document oversight activities to ensure compliance with enterprise risk management methodologies, tools, and processes.

  • Support the Canada Segment Risk Committee by preparing high‑quality meeting materials, drafting clear and accurate minutes, coordinating inputs from cross‑functional contributors, monitoring and following up on action items, developing and maintaining the committee agenda, and assembling comprehensive monthly meeting packages to enable effective oversight and decision‑making.

  • Contribute to a range of risk management activities on an as-needed basis including assessments related to risk culture and emerging risks.

  • Ensure alignment with Manulife Financial group policies and enterprise risk standards, escalating risk concerns in a timely and appropriate manner.

  • Strengthen collaboration with oversight and assurance functions (e.g. Internal Audit, Compliance, Legal, Information Security etc.) and maintain productive relationships across functional areas to enhance enterprise-wide risk management.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of risk management tools, techniques, and methodologies, with 3-5 years of experience in operational risk management or a highly related field which may include roles in operations management, finance, third party risk, fraud, legal, audit, compliance, risk consulting, etc.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in effective oversight and challenge, including assessment of control design and effectiveness.

  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills with an ability to negotiate, influence and collaborate for shared success and to build relationships with key partners and stakeholders.

  • Ability to create effective presentations, with the ability to summarize complex issues into clear decision points and action plans.

  • Knowledge of financial services/insurance business and related products

  • Team player who is adept at working in a matrix environment

  • Self-starter with ability to work independently

  • Detail-oriented with excellent analytical, critical thinking, problem-solving skills and the ability to think strategically.
