POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior MSL, shares a joint responsibility for achieving short and long-term company goals at local level.

This professional serves as a scientific liaison to the medical/academic community and is responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships and partnerships with Health Care Providers/Professionals to ensure the appropriate communication of clinical and scientific information regarding Vertex’ compounds in a timely, ethical and stakeholder-focused manner. The MSL contributes to shape the medical plan by providing external stakeholders' insights and contributes to the design and execution of the Medical Affairs strategy and plan.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Medical Expert Engagement

  • In collaboration with international medical affairs colleagues, lead appropriate identification, and engagement of experts, thought leaders, and study investigators in alignment with the Vertex medical strategy, in the north territory of Spain
  • Disseminate and discuss medical-scientific information about Vertex products and the therapeutic area with HCPs (e.g. external Medical Experts, researchers, key patient care providers) and relevant stakeholders involved in patient management in accordance with compliance guidelines
  • Upon unsolicited requests for information from HCPs, present data on Vertex products, this may include Vertex globally approved information on compounds in development with no approved indications.
  • Involve HCPs when a need is identified to provide support/advice/participate in specific medical and scientific activities
  • Develop and foster peer-to-peer, credible relationships with Thought Leaders and other Health Care Professionals.
  • Management of insights and visits in a CRM sysmtem

Scientific Exchange/ Insights

  • Support scientific exchange to advance understanding of new scientific principles, novel research trends, and current scientific debate
  • Collect, analyze and report insights from HCPs and external environment to inform and shape medical strategy
  • Provide scientific and educational information to HCPs on specific patient critical issues.
  • Build relationships with relevant medical societies, associations and health care institutions.

Scientific and Product Expertise

  • Maintain clinical, scientific, and technical expertise in the Therapeutic Area of CF, and in-depth and up to date knowledge of treatment trends, guidelines, Vertex’s pipeline, and understanding of the external competitor landscape

Scientific Projects

  • Implement scientific projects according to global, regional and local medical strategies. Examples may include, but not limited to, educational meetings, advisory boards, epidemiology projects, clinical and real-world evidence research, as well as multi-disciplinary projects involving education and collaboration of multiple functions in the medical community to improve CF patient management.

Internal Vertex Contributions

  • Provide expert disease area and product training to local Vertex colleagues
  • Proactively contribute to shape the medical plan by providing external stakeholders' insights and contribute to the design and execution of the Medical Affairs strategy and plan.
  • Identify and communicate business opportunities and threats
  • Plans, designs and executes with autonomy projects and/or initiatives as assigned by manager
  • Liaise with relevant internal teams (i.e. KAM, HEOR, Market Access) to understand and work on appropriate provision of up-to-date medical support to external groups and stakeholders

  • Ensure relevant processes and compliance procedures are always followed.

  • Work to ensure a diverse and inclusive environment free from all forms of discrimination and harassment.
  • Ensure appropriate oversight of any assigned budget

EDUCATION: Minimal/Desirable

  • Graduated in biotechnology, biomedical engineering, biomedicine, pharmacy, medicine or other life science related discipline. Doctoral degree preferred (PharmD, PhD, MD).

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Proven previous experience in a field medical position and activities related to the Vertex MSL role
  • Previous experience of developing and fostering peer-to-peer, credible relationships with Medical Experts and other Health Care Professionals.
  • Previous experience in therapeutic areas in the respiratory field preferred
  • Generates innovative ideas, solutions and creative new ideas to manage short- and long-term business needs
  • Working knowledge of the local and country Healthcare System, applicable laws and country codices and research procedures as well as the ICH guidelines, GCP and other ethical guidelines relevant to the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Good understanding of the local, national and regional guidelines of the therapeutic area of responsibility
  • Strong scientific, medical, research and technical expertise and ability to work across therapeutic areas.
  • Ability to understand and effectively convey emergent scientific and HEOR data.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Must be able to adapt, organize, prioritize, and work effectively on multifunctional teams in a constantly changing field-based environment.
  • Experience providing medical education to external and internal audiences
  • Familiar with the use of digital medical platforms and evolving digital platforms e.g. for stakeholder mapping, management, development and insights.
  • Strong personal integrity and focus on stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel overnight up to 70%, including occasional weekend travel
  • Valid driver’s license (depending on assigned geography)
  • Fluent in English & Local Language (oral and written).
