Engineering Manager, US Software Engineering is responsible for leading US based engineers across a range of seniority (Note: one or two US engineers may report elsewhere).  This role combines:
  • Ownership of the US engineering node as a full-function team
  • Accountability for feature delivery, with squads rotating through support duty alongside the wider engineering organization
  • Coaching and career development for engineers across all levels of seniority
  • Strengthening the team’s operating model and culture
  • Growing the team through hiring
  • Cross-site collaboration with Brisbane engineering, Product, and Support

This position will sit in Sandy, UT. (Hybrid)

What We Offer
This is the leadership role responsible for growing Opengear’s US software engineering capability. We have an established US engineering presence, and you’ll take ownership of it—leading our US-based engineers as a full-function team that delivers product features, with squads rotating through support duty alongside our Brisbane teams. You’ll grow the team through hiring and development, strengthen how US engineering operates, and shape a delivery culture aligned with Opengear’s evolution toward a domain-based, squad-oriented engineering model. As the team scales, you’ll have the opportunity to develop an additional US manager. This is a genuine opportunity to grow and shape an engineering team that will help define how Opengear delivers software in the US for years to come.

What You Will Do
  • Own delivery outcomes for the US engineering node as a full-function team—primarily feature delivery, with your squads rotating through support duty alongside the wider engineering organization rather than operating as a single-purpose support unit
  • Lead, manage, and develop the US-based engineers reporting to you, across all levels of seniority, through regular 1:1s, clear goal-setting, and active career development
  • Strengthen how US engineering operates day to day—delivery practices, ways of working, and a self-sufficient team culture aligned with Opengear’s broader engineering direction
  • Develop engineers across the team, building clear growth paths that take them toward senior and lead capability
  • Plan and balance your squads’ rotation through support duty alongside their feature delivery commitments, so that neither is deprioritized
  • Build domain depth and cross-skilling across the US team over time, identifying knowledge gaps and developing structured plans to close them
  • Grow the US team through hiring as headcount expands, and develop an additional US manager as the team reaches sufficient scale
  • Partner closely with the Software Director, peer Engineering Managers, the Solutions PO, and product stakeholders on planning, priority alignment, and cross-site dependencies
  • Provide technical and architectural guidance—assessing work complexity, challenging sizing, and coaching engineers through design decisions and implementation trade-offs across the products and domains they own
  • Champion strong engineering practices—software quality, automated testing, CI/CD, and secure development—and support the team through technology transitions while maintaining delivery commitments
  • Identify delivery risks and technical obstacles early, resolving cross-team dependencies and clearing the path to execution

Who You Are and What You Bring
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience: 8+ years in software engineering, with 3+ years in an engineering management or team lead capacity
  • Engineering manager with a demonstrated track record of leading high-performing software delivery teams
  • Energized by growing a team—comfortable strengthening a team’s operating model, culture, and practices, and scaling it through hiring and development
  • Strong people developer with a genuine record of growing engineers at all levels of seniority toward senior and lead capability
  • Comfortable running feature delivery while your squads rotate through support duty, balancing the two without letting either fall behind
  • Strong technical credibility in production-grade software development, enabling effective architectural guidance and sound decision-making on complexity, sizing, and implementation trade-offs
  • Comfortable leading with autonomy as part of a globally distributed organization—you build team self-sufficiency rather than dependency on your presence
  • Clear communicator who can work effectively across engineering, product, and support contexts, and across sites and time zones

Desired But Not Required
  • Experience growing an engineering team, site, or geographic node
  • Experience leading teams that balance feature delivery with customer response / support work
  • Experience working with globally distributed engineering teams across time zones
  • Familiarity with Kanban and Lean software practices
  • Background in data center, networking, or infrastructure software environments
