The Toast Enterprise Risk and Compliance Management Program provides a coordinated, company-wide approach to identify, measure, monitor, mitigate and treat risks while enabling the business to innovate and deliver quality products and solutions to serve our customers. 

Toast, Inc. seeks a seasoned model risk professional to lead the model risk management program and ensure advanced predictive, statistical, credit/lending, financial, and other machine learning models built and utilized by Toast are appropriately used, validated,  and comply with internal policies and requirements.


About this roll* (Responsibilities)

  • Design, implement, and manage the second line of defense model risk program overseeing high risk models utilized by Toast. 
  • Establish and maintain model risk management program governance documentation including model risk frameworks, policies, procedures, templates, and best practices. 
  • Define and implement key model requirements and standards, such as model development, implementation and use, validation, change management, governance, and controls. Oversee adoption by model developers and owners.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive model risk inventory inclusive of respective risk information. 
  • Conduct regular risk-based model validation reviews and oversee resulting remediation plans to address identified model risks and/or issues. 
  • Partner with cross-functional teams including Data Science, Data Engineering, Information Security, Product Engineering, Finance, Credit Risk, and Business Strategy to provide effective challenges, complete model validation, enforce model governance, and conduct ongoing monitoring. 
  • Inform and report to leadership model risk management issues, reports, risks, or practices. Escalate, prepare materials, and report on model risks to the relevant risk management committees, audit committee of the board, and internal audit. 
  • Stay current with the latest industry trends, new and improved data science methodologies, and model risk practices while continually enhancing the model risk management program at Toast. 


Do you have the right ingredients*? (Requirements)

  • Advanced degree in quantitative fields such as Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Financial Engineering or related disciplines. 
  • At least eight (8) years of experience in model risk management and/or data science at a fintech, bank, technology company, or consulting firm with a focus in credit risk modeling, financial models, and lending growth strategies.
  • Proficiency in machine learning, AI, and statistical modeling techniques. 
  • Strong proficiency in Python and SQL and experience with data science libraries and tools such as: Spark, Scala, sci-kit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, XGBoost etc.
  • Familiarity with standard software engineering practices and tools including object-oriented programming, test-driven development, CI/CD, git, task orchestration (Airflow), and AWS tooling. 
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of model risk management frameworks and practices. 
  • Ability to comprehend business problems, effectively challenge quantitative methodologies and articulate complex information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. 
  • Strong critical and analytical thinking, decision-making, innovative problem-solving, and excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to drive action, build consensus, and drive engagement among cross-functional stakeholders. Detail-oriented with the ability to meet firm deadlines.
  • Strong leadership skills, with experience managing and mentoring junior team members
