Job Description

The opportunity

We are seeking an experienced underwriter in HNW to manage the complete underwriting process, ensuring compliance with medical, financial, and regulatory standards. The role involves risk evaluation, maintaining underwriting consistency, and mentoring junior underwriters. The candidate will make competitive offers while upholding company policies and maintaining positive relations with partners. Senior Life Underwriters looking for a progression into the HNW space will be considered.


Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of underwriting process (medical, financial, compliance and regulatory assessment) within your delegated authority and service level agreements.

  • Select and classify risks according to company philosophy, standards and risk framework. 

  • Maintain underwriting consistency in line with internal underwriting guidelines.

  • Contribute to the continuing training and development of more junior underwriters. 

  • Ability to adapt to changing underwriting philosophy and apply new approaches.

  • Strong independent problem solving ability including research and presentation of potential solutions.

  • Communicate and collaborate with the field and head office colleagues to provide the highest quality and service levels to customers. 

  • Maintain positive and effective relationships with internal and external partners. 

  • Consistently make competitive offers without compromising overall underwriting policies or mortality experience.

What we are looking for

  • Minimum 8 to 10 years underwriting experience

  • Senior Life Underwriters looking for a progression into the HNW space will be considered.

  • AALU or FALU designation preferred. ACS designation is helpful.

  • Expert knowledge of underwriting function; sound understanding of various business operations. 

  • Awareness of current affairs and issues both corporate and external.

  • Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent analytical skills; ability to define, research and resolve problems. 

  • Ability to create and maintain strong customer relationships. 

  • Ability to prioritize and work effectively under deadlines, balancing published service times with an appropriate customer focus. 

  • Ability to comprehend, retain and apply current technical information to daily work issues. 

  • Solid knowledge of insurance contract law and state legislative requirements. 

  • Expert knowledge of reinsurance marketplace (including underwriting strengths and weaknesses) to work proactively with the field where reinsurance is an opportunity. 

  • Thorough understanding of automatic reinsurance agreements. 

  • Expert knowledge of medical science, technology and terminology and their impact on mortality. 

  • Expert knowledge of financial and other non-medical underwriting factors.
