The future of aerospace and defense starts here.

Ursa Major was founded to revolutionize how America and its allies access and apply high-performance propulsion, from hypersonics to solid rocket motors, satellite maneuvering and launch. We design and deliver propulsion and defense systems that solve the most urgent and critical national security demands.

The Maintenance Engineer is responsible for developing, executing, and continuously improving the preventive and predictive maintenance program for equipment supporting Solid Rocket Motor manufacturing both Inert Manufacturing and Energetics Manufacturing. This role combines hands-on maintenance work with planning, scheduling, vendor coordination, and asset management to maximize equipment uptime, ensure safe operations, and support on-time program execution in an aerospace production environment.

The Maintenance Engineer collaborates closely with Production, Programs, Planning/Scheduling, Quality, EHS, and Supply Chain/Inventory Management to align maintenance activities with build schedules and operational priorities.

Key Responsibilities

Preventive & Predictive Maintenance (PM)

  • Develop, implement, and maintain preventive maintenance schedules for all critical manufacturing equipment used for Solid Rocket manufacturing of Inerts and Energetics operations.
  • Prepare maintenance reports and keep detailed records of equipment maintenance and repairs. Detailed Records will assist audits and inspections by internal stakeholders, customers, and regulatory agencies.
  • Perform routine PM tasks directly on equipment where appropriate (mechanical, basic electrical, and system-level checks).
  • Coordinate advanced or specialized PM activities with OEMs and third‑party service providers, including scheduling and overseeing on‑site work.
  • Create, standardize, and maintain equipment-specific maintenance SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and work instructions for all PM and routine inspection activities.
  • Identify, track, and execute all required PMs across the Solid Rocket business, including safety and regulatory inspections.

Asset & Equipment Management

  • Maintain a comprehensive asset register for existing and new manufacturing equipment, including configuration, status, maintenance history, and critical spares.
  • Support equipment commissioning, acceptance, and integration into the maintenance program as new assets are brought online.
  • Ensure equipment documentation (manuals, drawings, OEM recommended PMs) is collected, organized, and accessible.

Monitoring, Data & Analytics

  • Support the implementation of real-time machine monitoring and predictive analytics (vibration, temperature, throughput, etc.) to reduce unplanned downtime.
  • Work with Engineering, Controls/Automation, and digital operations to integrate sensors, data acquisition, and reporting tools into equipment and maintenance workflows.
  • Analyze equipment performance and failure data to drive continuous improvement, refine PM intervals, and identify root causes of recurring issues.

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems; familiarity with electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems used in manufacturing equipment.
  • Experience with preventive maintenance planning and execution.
  • Familiarity with OEM manuals, technical drawings, and maintenance specifications.
  • Basic understanding of condition monitoring and predictive maintenance technologies (e.g., vibration analysis, thermography, sensors, data logging) is a plus.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or closely related engineering discipline) required.
  • Experience in industrial maintenance, manufacturing engineering, or reliability engineering preferred; aerospace or defense manufacturing experience is a plus.
  • Experience with Solid Rocket Motor, energetics, or other hazardous materials environments is highly desirable.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Work performed in a mix of office, manufacturing, and energetic material handling environments.
  • Ability to be on the shop floor regularly, including standing, walking, climbing ladders, and working around heavy equipment.
  • Will require use of PPE and adherence to strict safety protocols, especially in Energetics manufacturing areas.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and move equipment or parts as required (within reasonable ergonomic limits).

Colorado law requires us to tell you the base compensation range of this role, which is $116,000 - $146,000, determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities. What we can’t quantify for you are the exciting challenges, supportive team, and amazing culture we enjoy.
