Senior Machine Learning Engineer

We're looking for a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join our AI Data Engine team and help build the foundation that powers all of Nearmap's AI products.

The Data Engine team produces the large-scale, high-quality labeled datasets that fuel our machine learning models. But we're not just building another data pipeline – we're creating a self-improving system that intelligently optimises both model training effectiveness and labelling resource allocation. Because we know that great AI starts with great data.

For this role we’re looking for a Senior ML Engineer to focus on backend services. You'll work alongside talented AI researchers to build robust, scalable systems that power our data operations. While ML knowledge is valuable, this role centres on software engineering rather than model training.

Key Responsibilities:

• Build and optimise backend services, APIs, and databases that support our ML data workflows
• Design and maintain sophisticated labelling and data systems using Python, SQL, Kubernetes, Argo, and GitLab
• Partner with data scientists and ML engineers to create seamless workflows across diverse ML applications
• Guide architectural decisions and ensure our systems align with best practices and organisational goals
• Mentor engineers at all levels while championing collaboration and operational excellence

What We're Looking For:

• 5+ years building scalable, production-grade software systems (ideally in ML/MLOps environments)
• Strong Python skills and deep experience with distributed systems on Linux
• Proven track record with CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, and production optimisation
• Excellent collaboration skills – you'll work closely with data scientists and ML engineers
• Bonus points for experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Snowflake, and AWS services (S3, RDS, EKS)

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field
