Actuary – Group Internal Audit

Lisbon  |  Senior Level

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced actuary to apply technical insurance and actuarial expertise within a strategic, cross-functional setting. As part of the Group Internal Audit team, you will use your specialist knowledge to evaluate and add insight to areas such as reserving, capital, pricing and exposure management across the Group — engaging with senior stakeholders, influencing decisions at Board and Committee level, and shaping how the business manages risk.

No prior internal audit experience is required — what matters is strong actuarial and technical insurance grounding. The team will support your development on the audit methodology side.

About the role

You will join a small but dynamic team based across three hubs: UK (London), Europe (Lisbon and Luxembourg), and the US (Atlanta and White Plains). The role is based in Lisbon, with the primary reporting line into an Audit Director based in Luxembourg.

Your day-to-day work will focus on applying actuarial and technical insurance expertise to assess key business areas. You will lead and contribute to structured reviews from initial scoping through to reporting, working closely with stakeholders to make practical, value-adding recommendations. You will also have the opportunity to shape the team's strategy, contribute to its continued development, and take on special projects beyond the core plan.

What you'll do
  • Apply your actuarial and technical insurance knowledge to evaluate areas such as reserving, capital, pricing, exposure management and other core actuarial disciplines across the Group.
  • Lead the end-to-end delivery of reviews — scoping, planning, execution, reporting and follow-up of recommendations — with support and methodology guidance from the team.
  • Engage and build strong relationships with senior stakeholders across the business, including coordination with external SMEs where required.
  • Make pragmatic, commercially aware recommendations that genuinely add value to the business.
  • Draft clear, well-reasoned written reports that will be shared at Group Committee and Board level.
  • Contribute to the team's planning, strategy and continued development — leading the implementation of specific initiatives as needed.
  • Support, supervise and coach other team members, and help build the function's reputation across the Group.
What we're looking for
  • At least 4 years of experience in one or more core actuarial disciplines — reserving, capital, pricing, exposure management — within insurance, reinsurance or actuarial consultancy.
  • A degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, economics or a related discipline. Actuarial qualification (or working towards) is preferred but not essential.
  • Strong technical knowledge of the insurance industry and its key actuarial functions. Prior internal audit experience is welcome but not required — we'll support the right candidate in building this side.
  • A dynamic, self-confident professional who can deliver with minimal day-to-day supervision and the inherent flexibility to adapt the approach as needed.
  • Comfortable engaging senior stakeholders and confident in delivering difficult messages when needed.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical content into clear, business-relevant insight.
  • Strong relationship-building, influencing and negotiation skills.
  • Sound commercial awareness, innovative problem-solving, and the courage to apply both.
About the team

The Group Internal Audit team provides independent and objective assurance and advice to the Group Audit Committee and to the Boards of Directors of companies within the Group, covering all aspects of the business and its activities. The team works closely with other monitoring functions including Group Compliance and Group Risk, and develops its plans using a risk-based approach.

Our vision is to be recognised as a leading-edge audit function — one that delivers robust assurance and value-creating insight through the excellence of its people, processes and technology. Our work follows the mandatory guidance of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), including the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing, as well as the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors' (CIIA) guidance on Effective Internal Audit in the Financial Services Sector.

If you're an actuary looking to step beyond traditional actuarial roles and apply your expertise in a broader, more strategic way — influencing how risk is managed across an international insurance group — we'd love to hear from you.
