We're looking for someone who doesn't simply know HR rules - you know HR well enough to operate independently and confidently - someone who can coach a manager through a difficult employee situation, conduct a workplace investigation, manage a leave or workers' compensation claim, interpret employment policies, and recognize when and issue create risk for the company.
If you combine strong HR knowledge with sound judgement, common sense and a genuine ability to connect with people, we'd love to meet you!

Responsibilities
  • Serve as a trusted HR resource to leaders and team members across all six Modernistic locations
  • Coach managers through employee relations, performance management, corrective action and other workplace issues
  • Conduct and document workplace investigations
  • Respond to employee concerns and help resolve issues fairly and consistently
  • Manage FMLA, ADA accommodations and other employee leaves
  • Manage workers' compensation claims and related documentation
  • Maintain OSHA logs and support company-wide safety compliance
  • Oversee benefits administration and serve as the primary HR contact for benefit vendors
  • Ensure HR practices and employee documentation comply with federal and Michigan employment laws
  • Develop and improve HR policies, processes and best practices
  • Track HR metrics, including turnover and retention, and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Travel periodically to our Michigan locations to remain a visible and accessible HR resource
  • Act as a Recruiter when necessary

What We're Looking For
Required:
  • 5+ years of progressive HR experience in a Generalist, Senior Generalist, HR Manager or similar role
  • Demonstrated experience independently handling employee relations, corrective action, performance management and workplace investigations
  • Strong working knowledge of federal and Michigan employment laws
  • Hands-on experience with FMLA, ADA, FLSA, OSHA and workers' compensation
  • Experience with employee benefits administration
  • Experience coaching and advising managers through employee-related situations
  • Strong judgement and ability to recognize and appropriately escalate risk
  • Excellent communication, organization and problem-solving skills
  • High level of discretion and confidentiality
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities
  • Valid Michigan driver's license and good driving record; some in-state travel is required
  • Ability to successfully complete required background screening and drug testing
Preferred:
  • Multi-location HR experience
  • Experience in a service, skilled-trades, construction, restoration or other field-based workforce
  • Experience with HRIS systems and HR reporting
  • SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR or SPHR certifications

Benefits
  • Medical insurance with 60% of premium costs covered by Modernistic for team members and their dependents
  • Dental and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • Company-paid basic life insurance
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Pet Insurance
  • Employee discounts
  • Company laptop and cell phone reimbursement
  • Professional development and growth opportunities

We look forward to meeting you!
