Your Opportunity
This role offers an opportunity for an experienced engineer who enjoys hands-on technical work and is interested in learning more about project management.
As a Senior Highway Engineer, you’ll bring your experience in highways, streets, and roadway design to lead and support a wide range of projects—from conceptual planning through final design and construction. You’ll manage the design and delivery of transportation projects while working independently on smaller assignments and collaboratively on larger initiatives. This role involves applying advanced knowledge, sound engineering principles, and best practices to solve complex problems, while also supporting Project Managers in areas such as budgeting, scheduling, and client coordination.
The role will guide and mentor junior staff but will not have direct report responsibilities. Sitting in our Pittsburgh, PA office, you’ll be exposed to a wide variety of roadway projects including corridors, interchanges, intersections, and mega projects.

Your Key Responsibilities
- Lead and prepare complex engineering designs, plans, and drawings for a variety of projects, including urban and rural roadways, highways, and intersections.
- Apply advanced knowledge of transportation engineering principles and stay current on evolving methods and technologies.
- Assist with client production.
- Attend and assist in client/contractor/stakeholder meetings to gain a better understanding of client’s goals. Coordinate effectively with Project Managers and multidisciplinary teams.
- Responsible for the design, plan production and quality reviews of assigned projects.
- Supervise and mentor engineers, CAD staff, and junior team members, providing leadership, guidance, and professional development.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Registered Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania required.
- Proven ability to solve complex problems using sound judgment, creativity, and innovation.
- Ability to review the work of others for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with design standards.
- Highly organized with excellent time management skills and a commitment to meeting project deadlines and budgets.
- Collaborative, detail-oriented, and self-motivated with a positive attitude and a passion for team success.
- Working knowledge of PennDOT design criteria, design manuals, and standards.
- Familiar with MicroStation as well as relevant software programs which may include InRoads/OpenRoads, AutoTURN, and ASTA.
- Familiarity with PennDOT ECMS, URMS, AutoTAB, PCIT, and EPS interfaces.
- Proficient in Microsoft (MS) Office Suite
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering or related field.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in highway design and plan preparation for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
- Experience in highway design for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission a plus.
Position will primarily work in an office setting; may require some field work.
