The Role

Senior Functional Engineer - Salesforce

The role / impact

As a Senior Functional Engineer – Salesforce, you will translate complex sales and marketing requirements into robust, scalable Salesforce configurations across a large, highly customised org. You’ll own functional design for key domains such as lead management, routing, and campaign processes, acting as the bridge between business objectives and technical implementation.

You’ll drive functional excellence by ensuring configuration is maintainable, scalable, and aligned to user needs, while operating within a DevOps and continuous delivery model. Your work will directly support Xero’s mission of helping small businesses thrive, by making sure our Salesforce products are reliable, performant, and fit for purpose in a high‑volume environment.

The team / how they connect

You’ll join Pegasus, a dedicated pod within Xero’s wider Salesforce team, focused on enabling performance marketing and lead routing across our global go‑to‑market organisation. The team works closely with stakeholders to ensure priorities are clear, value is delivered consistently, and our Salesforce platform scales with our growth.

Xero operates one of New Zealand’s largest and most comprehensive Salesforce implementations, with multiple clouds and a highly customised, high‑volume environment.

Initially, you will focus on

  • Refine Sales Cloud architecture for performance marketing and lead routing, reducing technical debt and improving the stability, scalability, and performance of core sales processes.

  • Lead discovery and functional design for new and evolving capabilities across Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Experience Cloud, and Marketing Cloud, from problem framing through to detailed configuration design.

  • Translate complex business problems into clear work by shaping user stories, acceptance criteria, and functional specifications that give engineers and admins high‑quality input to build from.

  • Work within our DevOps framework to ensure configuration changes flow safely through environments, supporting continuous delivery and automated release processes.

  • Document process flows, data models, and configuration decisions so that the wider team can operate, extend, and troubleshoot the platform with confidence over time.

  • Assess technical feasibility and risk for proposed changes, particularly in high‑volume or business‑critical areas, and provide clear recommendations that balance user value with platform health.

  • Collaborate with engineers, admins, and business stakeholders to ensure alignment on priorities, trade‑offs, and rollout approaches, including workshops, demos, and production readiness reviews.

  • Mentor and support others in best‑practice Salesforce configuration, functional design, and platform governance, helping to lift standards across the team.

Where and how you can work

Xero supports a hybrid working model, collaborating seamlessly across numerous cities with a mix of office-based and remote work. You will have access to our modern office spaces for "boost days" and team gatherings, fostering a culture of connection regardless of your physical location.

Here are some of the things we are looking for

  • Deep Salesforce configuration experience (e.g. as a Functional Consultant, Senior Admin, or similar) in large, highly customised orgs with significant data volumes and complex business processes.

  • Proven ability to own functional design for Sales Cloud solutions, especially around lead management, routing, and sales process optimisation in high‑volume environments.

  • Strong skills in translating customer and stakeholder needs into clear user stories, requirements, and configuration designs, including edge cases and non‑functional considerations.

  • Experience working in a DevOps or modern delivery model (e.g. CI/CD, automated deployments, version control, environment strategy) and an understanding of how configuration choices impact these practices.

  • Comfortable collaborating across technical and non‑technical teams, with the ability to facilitate workshops, influence decisions, and build trusted relationships with stakeholders at different levels.

  • Broad exposure across the Salesforce product suite, ideally including Sales Cloud plus some combination of Service Cloud, Experience Cloud, and Marketing Cloud.

  • Awareness of integration patterns and data flows (e.g. APIs, middleware, streaming/batch integrations) and how they influence functional design and configuration choices in Salesforce.

  • Salesforce certifications such as Administrator, Advanced Administrator, Sales Cloud Consultant, or App Builder as a base would be beneficial

  • Experience designing or supporting solutions that integrate Salesforce with marketing platforms, data platforms, or external lead management tools.

  • Experience mentoring other functional engineers, admins, or business analysts, and contributing to shared standards, patterns, or governance frameworks.

Apply even if your experience isn't a perfect match! At Xero, we hire based on your skills, passion, and the unique perspective you can bring to enhance our culture and team.
