At Midland States Bank, base salary is one component of our Total Rewards program. Exact compensation is determined by factors such as (but not limited to) education, skills, internal equity, and experience. This position offers additional compensation in the form of short-term incentives (i.e. bonus and/or commission) and may include long-term incentives (i.e. stock awards). Benefits for this role include comprehensive healthcare, well-being benefits, paid family leave as well as generous paid time off. Senior Financial Planner 

 

Salary Range: $106,250 - $141,650

Position Summary 

 

The Senior Financial Planner serves as a technical planning expert, partnering with Wealth Advisors, Trust Officers, and other relationship managers to develop comprehensive financial plans for high-net-worth clients and prospects. This role gathers and analyzes client financial information, develops customized planning recommendations, and presents strategies that address retirement, tax, estate, insurance, cash flow, education, and legacy planning objectives. 

 

The Senior Financial Planner utilizes both eMoney and MoneyGuide to model sophisticated planning scenarios and deliver actionable recommendations that strengthen client relationships and support new business development. The Senior Financial Planner serves as a thought leader in financial planning by identifying emerging planning strategies, industry trends, and best practices, helping advisors and clients capitalize on sophisticated planning opportunities that enhance the firm’s value proposition. Additionally, the Senior Financial Planner is expected to champion the Midland brand, engage in community events, and lead partnerships across all lines of business. This position is an individual contributor role. 

 

Primary Accountabilities 

 

Planning Responsibilities 

 

  • Develop comprehensive financial plans utilizing both eMoney and MoneyGuide software. 

  • Analyze complex financial situations involving retirement, tax, estate, insurance, cash flow, education, executive compensation, charitable giving, and business succession planning. 

  • Prepare customized planning recommendations aligned with each client’s goals and objectives. 

  • Evaluate multiple planning scenarios and clearly communicate recommendations to advisors and clients. 

  • Recommend innovative planning strategies that address complex client needs while supporting the continued evolution of the firm's financial planning capabilities. 

  • Continuously monitor and update financial plans as client circumstances evolve. 

 

Advisor Partnership 

 

  • Partner with Wealth Advisors, Trust Officers, and other relationship managers to identify planning opportunities. 

  • Participate in client meetings to explain planning strategies and answer technical questions. Serve as the technical planning resource for Wealth Management. 

  • Assist advisors in converting planning opportunities into new client relationships and expanded services. 

  • Serve as a consultative planning partner by proactively identifying opportunities to deepen client relationships through advanced planning strategies and cross-line-of-business collaboration. 

 

Technical Expertise 

 

  • Research changes in tax law, retirement regulations, estate planning, financial planning best practices, and emerging Wealth Management trends. 

  • Identify sophisticated planning concepts and industry innovations that create new opportunities for clients and the Wealth Management division. 

  • Develop planning resources, best practices, and educational materials for advisors. 

  • Share planning insights with advisors and business partners through presentations, training sessions, and internal communications. 

Other 

 

  • Represents the Bank in community organizations and activities to enhance the Bank’s image. 

  • Occasional travel for training and team meetings, and willingness to travel periodically to locations within market as needed. 

  • May require work in a Midland office to ensure collaboration and support of internal and external customers.  

  • Maintain compliance with all applicable regulations including, but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA). 

  • Other duties as assigned.  

 

Position Qualifications 

 

Education/Experience: 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Financial Planning, Business, Accounting or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

  • 7-10+ years comprehensive financial planning experience supporting high-net-worth clients. 

  • Demonstrated experience developing sophisticated financial plans involving retirement, tax, estate, insurance, and wealth transfer strategies. 

  • Demonstrated ability to stay current on emerging financial planning strategies, regulatory developments, and industry trends, and translate those insights into practical client and advisor solutions. 

  • Experience working collaboratively with Wealth Advisors, Trust Officers, attorneys, and CPAs. 

  • CFP (Certified Financial Planner) designation preferred. 

  • Advanced proficiency with eMoney and/or MoneyGuide Pro 

  • FINRA Series 65 (or ability to obtain within 12 months) 

  • State Life, Health, and Annuity license (or ability to obtain within 12 months) 

  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. 

  • Strong organization and time management skills. 

  • Strong attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy. 

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
