We're looking for a Senior Principal Backend Software Engineer to join our team, passionately focused on delivering creative improvements for our engineering teams.

As a EM in this organization, you will help turn this vision into reality. You will shape the platform capabilities, technical strategy, and engineering practices that enable Jira to become the system of record and control plane for the next generation of human and agent teamwork. Our work is guided by three forces that will power the Jira Platform flywheel:

1. AI TRANSFORMATION: Make Jira the agent-native system of record and control plane for human and agent teamwork, designing systems that enable people and AI agents to work together effectively.
2. ENTERPRISE READINESS: Build the security, scale, resilience, and administrative capabilities required to earn the trust of the world's largest and most demanding enterprises as they move to the Cloud.
3. EFFICIENCY: Create a platform with sound unit economics that accelerates developer productivity, supports a growing agentic workload, and delivers world-class reliability for Jira Cloud customers.

Your future team
API extensibility addresses two major gaps for Jira Platform preventing future agentic and cloud growth. First, reactive gaps: customers are hitting real blockers today driven by company-wide initiatives in motion, including DC to Cloud migration, Connect to Forge migration, and rate limiting rollout. Legacy API gaps that were once tolerable have become migration-critical. Second, proactive structural gaps: Establish Governance as the foundation, Enterprise Readiness to close the immediate gaps, and Agent-first Jira as the strategic bet.
As a Senior Engineering Manager, you will bring your rich technical and leadership experience in driving a team of 2-3 scrum teams. The overall span of the team would be 12-20 and would be the front-line manager role, to start with. As a senior leader, you will work closely with multiple principal engineers, mentor and coach engineers. You will not only drive impactful business outcomes but also take part actively in driving the technical architecture. As a seasoned leader, you will bring in world-class engineering excellence and operational excellence. You'll also thrive in a challenging and growing business environment that has ambiguity, multiple global dependency footprints, and diverse stakeholders.

• Experience in leading large development teams directly
• Experience in developing platforms and products in a SaaS world
• Strong technical experience and a passion for getting involved in the details
• Familiarity with agile software development methodologies
• Ability to drive technical excellence, pushing innovation, quality, and operational excellence
• Strong organization and communication skills
• Driving clarity from single-line requirements and providing direction in an ambiguous environment
• A track record of strong execution and delivering results

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in defining strategic roadmaps for products and platforms
• Experience with distributed development teams
• Continuous delivery with a strong bias for action
