Role: Senior Engineer – Component Codes & Standards

Location: Hybrid working with one of the following locations as primary: Derby, Warrington or Manchester

Our Mission

Our mission is to deliver clean, affordable energy for all. Our Small Modular Reactor (SMR) provides a British solution to a global energy crisis. We are in pole position to become a world leader in SMRs and the UK’s premier green export technology.

The Team

The Component & Structural Integrity Integration team provides technical coordination and governance on the use of codes and standards, ways of working and structural integrity policy and requirements for components and mechanical equipment within the SMR programme. Operating across multiple disciplines including design, manufacturing and safety, the team ensures compliance with nuclear, pressure equipment and international regulatory requirements, supporting both UK delivery and global deployment.

The Role

We are seeking a Senior Engineer – Component Codes & Standards to manage and govern the use of engineering codes and standards across the components and mechanical equipment scope within Rolls‑Royce SMR. Reporting to the Senior Manager for Component & Structural Integrity Integration, this role plays a key part in ensuring consistent compliance with legislation and standards across the programme.

The role is particularly critical in supporting and shaping the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section III compliance strategy, while also advising on wider pressure equipment legislation, international regulatory environments, manufacturing standards and interfaces with the structural integrity case.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

As Senior Engineer – Component Codes & Standards, you will:

Codes, Standards & Legislative Compliance

  • Manage, maintain and evolve policies and guidance for the selection and application of component codes and standards

  • Provide clarity on UK pressure equipment legislation (e.g. PE(S)R, PSSR) and how compliance is demonstrated through codes and standards

  • Support the application of codes and standards across different international markets and regulatory regimes, enabling future export deployment

ASME BPVC Section III Programme

  • Play a key role in setting and supporting the strategic direction of the ASME Section III programme, a major business undertaking

  • Provide technical advice on the structure, intent and application of ASME BPVC Section III requirements

  • Support definition and oversight of organisational roles, interfaces and cross‑functional responsibilities required by the Code

  • Work with design, manufacturing, quality and structural integrity colleagues to resolve code interpretation and compliance issues

Integration Across Engineering Disciplines

  • Support the wider Component & Structural Integrity Integration team, including interfaces with manufacturing standards and the structural integrity case

  • Provide guidance on how safety functional requirements and nuclear safety classification drive code selection and design decisions

  • Ensure consistent flow‑down of code and standards requirements into component specifications, design activities and supplier documentation

Governance, Communication & Oversight

  • Supervise and support codes and standards activities within the team and across the department, without direct line management authority

  • Contribute to and oversee cross‑functional programmes of work related to compliance and standards adoption

  • Prepare and deliver clear technical reports, presentations and briefings to stakeholders at all levels of the organisation

Why This Role Is Different

This role offers the opportunity to shape how a first‑of‑a‑kind nuclear programme applies and governs its codes and standards, balancing regulatory expectations, engineering best practice and practical delivery. You will influence decisions that directly affect safety, licensability and international deployment of the SMR.

What You’ll Bring

  • A degree‑level qualification (or equivalent experience) in a relevant engineering discipline

  • An understanding of mechanical and pressure boundary component codes, standards and related legislation

  • Working knowledge of ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, particularly Section III, and its organisational and cross‑functional impacts

  • Experience contributing to complex engineering programmes and communicating compliance positions clearly to diverse stakeholders

  • The ability to plan, manage and prioritise work while influencing others without formal authority

Location & Ways of Working

This role can be based at any Rolls‑Royce SMR location. We support flexible and hybrid working arrangements, with periodic on‑site attendance required to support collaboration, technical reviews and programme activities.

Reward & Benefits

  • Competitive salary - £53,800-£63,000

  • Annual bonus opportunity of up to 12.5%

  • £2,200 flexible benefits allowance

  • 28 days’ holiday plus public holidays

  • Membership of the Rolls‑Royce SMR pension scheme

  • Flexible and part‑time working options to support work‑life balance

Selection Process & Security

The recruitment process will include an initial conversation with the Talent Acquisition Partner, followed by competency‑ and technically‑focused interviews.

Due to regulatory and export control requirements, candidates will be required to complete BPSS clearance, a DBS check and basic financial probity screening.
