Radiant's goal is to bring one of the world's first factory-constructed microreactors to market.
The Role

Radiant is an El Segundo, CA-based startup building the world’s first mass-produced, portable nuclear microreactors. The company’s first reactor, Kaleidos, is a 1-megawatt failsafe microreactor that can be transported anywhere power is needed and run for up to five years without the need to refuel. Portable nuclear power with rapid deploy capability can replace similar-sized diesel generators, and provide critical asset support for hospitals, data centers, remote sites, and military bases. Radiant’s unique, practical approach to nuclear development utilizes modern software engineering to rapidly achieve safe, factory-built microreactors that leverage existing, well-qualified materials. Founded in 2020, Radiant is on track to test its first reactor next year at the Idaho National Laboratory, with initial customer deliveries beginning in 2028.

Radiant is seeking a talented Senior Electrical Engineer to own designs from requirements capture through operation. The candidate will be directly responsible for components of the nuclear microreactor control and measurement systems. The ideal candidate should be comfortable jumping from designing circuit boards to integration work interfacing with fault-tolerant, off-the-shelf hardware. This role requires collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams designing the nuclear reactor core, fluid heat transfer systems, and structures.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support the architecture, design, implementation, and testing of the microreactor electrical control systems
  • Design and develop industrial electrical control hardware including schematics, wiring diagrams, harnessing, and integration assemblies
  • Lead design of fault-tolerant and safety-critical electrical systems, emphasizing reliability, maintainability, and regulatory compliance
  • Develop and review electrical interface designs between control systems, power equipment, and instrumentation
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable electrical codes and safety standards including NFPA and NEC requirements
  • Perform SCCR and Arc Flash calculations

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of experience designing electrical hardware
  • Experience designing fault-tolerant and safety critical hardware
  • Experience with Ethernet, EtherCAT, Modbus, CANbus, RS-422, or other communications protocols
  • Experience selecting, integrating, and troubleshooting sensors including pressure transducers, RTDs, thermocouples, shaft speed and position sensors, IEPE vibration sensors, and MEMS-based sensors
  • Experience using electrical design software such as AutoCAD Electrical, Zuken, or similar schematic and wiring design tools
  • Experience designing, analyzing, and working safely with industrial power systems including 120 VAC, 208 VAC, and 480 VAC equipment, including applicable electrical safety practices
  • Strong electrical engineering fundamentals
  • Experience specifying and integrating Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), soft starters, and motor control centers (MCCs)

Desired Qualifications & Skills:

  • Experience in electrical architecture make vs. buy trades
  • Experience with Siemens NX
  • Experience with PLCs, Twincat, structured text programming
  • Familiarity with EMI/EMC mitigation techniques and testing
  • Experience with Python, C/C++, or scripting languages for test automation, data acquisition, or diagnostics
  • Experience supporting nuclear instrumentation systems
  • Experience with FMEAs and hazard analysis
  • Experience with industrial network architecture and deterministic control networks
Additional Requirements
  • Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as necessary to accomplish our mission
  • Must work 100% onsite at El Segundo HQ

This is an exempt salaried role.

What We Do

Radiant is a clean energy startup building a nuclear microreactor. A climate-friendly alternative to diesel generators, Radiant's Kaleidos 1MW microreactor will be the world's first portable, zero-emissions power source that works anywhere. We plan to test our development reactor by 2026 and if successful, it will be the first new commercial reactor design to achieve a fueled test in over 50 years. Our microreactor can bring power to remote parts of the world and provide backup power for life-saving applications in hospitals or disaster-relief scenarios.

Why Work With Us

Our world-class team has prior experience in complex hardware development from SpaceX, McMaster, The Boring Company, and renowned national laboratories that define our mentality to radically improve our microreactors. We care deeply about our mission to reduce carbon emissions, and have fun while doing so from trivia nights to ski retreats.
