Huntsman is seeking a Senior Ecotoxicologist supporting the Global EHS Division in The Woodlands, Texas. Remote work is an option. This position will report to the Toxicology Team Manager.

Job Scope

The senior ecotoxicologist provides expert advice to all Huntsman businesses, by the application of professional judgment in ecotoxicology, exposure sciences and regulatory compliance.

The candidate is responsible for supporting the development and registration of Huntsman products, using hazard and exposure data to conduct environmental risk assessments, support evaluation and authorization processes and to ensure the regulatory compliance of Huntsman products. The candidate should have a strong background in environmental science including environmental risk assessment, environmental chemistry, ecotoxicology, analytical chemistry, as well as proven track record of teamwork capability. Laboratory experiences on biodegradation and ecotoxicity testing are preferred. The candidate will design environmental testing and assessment strategies with the aim to minimize animal testing without risking the environmental or human health safety profile of products.  Given the role supports a global team and all regions, semi-frequent travel will be necessary.

The Senior Ecotoxicologist will operate with minimal supervision. Their core responsibilities are as follows:

  • Along with colleagues from the toxicology team, support the three Huntsman divisions with environmental hazard and risk assessment expertise in all stages of product development (R&D of new chemicals/products and/or new markets and uses). This requires the candidate to understand the requirements set forth by the authorities in the different regions (TSCA, REACH, Canada, Korea, China) and collaborate with regulatory specialists to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Study monitor external ecotoxicological/ environmental fate studies, ensuring choice of laboratory is undertaken according to internal and external guidelines. 
  • Use of in silico tools (QSAR and read across) for screening, prioritization and where appropriate, regulatory endpoint data submission.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to prepare dossier submissions in IUCLID or other formats. Includes application of read-across approaches for environmental fate and ecotoxicity endpoint data requirements.
  • Technical lead for ecotoxicology related issue management or substance defense. Steer advocacy strategies with regulatory bodies and active participation in discussions with global authorities across the Huntsman portfolio.
  • Maintain technical expertise in areas of ecotoxicology and risk assessment.  Keep abreast of relevant regulations, legislation and emerging issues related to environmental hazard. Communicate impact to relevant Huntsman divisions.
  • Ensure ecotoxicological, environmental fate & physical-chemical data used for the classification of Huntsman products are scientifically evaluated, are up-to -date and maintained in the appropriate Huntsman databases and systems. Proactively communicate changes to stakeholders to ensure full understandings and business implications.
  • Represent Huntsman in various industry consortia and trade associations.  Be an active participant in all meetings. Advise and convey relevant information to stakeholders which could influence or impact Huntsman operations.

Qualifications

You must possess the below minimum qualifications to be initially considered for this position. Preferred qualifications are in addition to the minimum requirements and are considered a plus factor in identifying top candidates.
 
The candidate must have an unrestricted right to work for Huntsman in the United States.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree (Master/ PhD) with 10 years of relevant professional experience preferably in an international company in the chemical or pharmaceutical sector, or at a Contract research organization.
  • Extensive applied experience in Regulatory ecotoxicology, risk assessment and defense of self-classification and labelling (GHS, CLP).
  • Knowledge of ecotoxicological and environmental fate methods and guidelines and well as use of in silico tools (QSARs) and read across.
  • Extensive experience with EU REACH, TSCA and Canada chemical registration.
  • Practical experience with relevant software tools such as OECD QSAR toolbox, IUCLID, CHESAR, easyTRA.
  • Experience with consortia and trade association work.
  • Fluency in English. Ability to work with colleagues globally in a multi-cultural environment and in a hybrid setting is essential.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional certification as ecotoxicologist/ environmental scientist is a plus.
  • Practical experience with China and Korea chemical registration is a plus.
  • Previous environmental lab experience on environmental safety assays is desirable

Remote work is an option.

Up to 20% travel.
