What is this role?
The Senior Director of Enterprise and Cloud Data Services is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the strategic direction, management, and execution of data engineering initiatives within the infrastructure organization.
We are seeking candidates with a dynamic and innovative approach towards harnessing generative AI to revolutionize the data space and drive transformative outcomes.
This position's primary role will be to drive innovation, optimize data engineering processes, and drive efficiency.
Key Responsibilities: Strategy and Leadership:

  • Develop and implement a clear vision and strategy for infrastructure data organization (Architecture, Engineering and day-2 Ops) aligned with organizational goals and objectives
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to the team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement
  • Recruit, hire, train and retain a strong engineering team, promoting a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous learning
  • Oversee the design, implementation and maintenance of scalable and robust data infrastructure systems including databases, data warehouses, data movement and reporting tools.
  • Ensure data availability, integrity, and security across all infrastructure components, adhering to industry best practices and compliance requirements.
  • Monitor and optimize data infrastructure performance, identifying opportunities for enhancement and addressing any issues or bottlenecks. Continuous improvement and Innovation:
  • Stay up to date with the latest trends, technologies and best practices in data engineering and infrastructure management
  • Drive innovation and identify opportunities for process optimization, automation and the adoption of new tools and technologies to improve data engineering efficiency and effectiveness in Vendor management:
  • Evaluate, select, and manage relationships with external vendors, contractors, and technology partners to ensure efficient delivery of data engineering solutions and services.


Experience required:
The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic, be a self-starter, and able to be highly productive in a dynamic, collaborative environment. The ideal candidate will have the following experience / knowledge / ability:

  • Ability to work Hybrid Model in either the Milwaukee office (Monday/Tuesday / Wednesday) or in the NYC office (Thursday+ 1 other day AND 25% travel to Milwaukee)
  • 15+ years in data platform engineering, infrastructure management or related roles, with at least 8 years in a senior leadership capacity
  • Strong technical expertise in database and data engineering tools, technologies, and platforms (datawarehouses, datalakes/lakehouses, BI and reporting tools, ETL and CDC tools besides commodity DB platforms - SQL/MySQL, PostgreSQL, DB2, Sybase, MongoDB etc)
  • Strong understanding of cloud-based data technologies (AWS, Azure), data engineering frameworks and tools and experience with containerization and orchestration
  • Excellent critical thinking, verbal, and written communication skills. Ability to communicate with senior levels of the organization
  • Familiarity of data governance, data security and regulatory compliance frameworks
  • Experience working in a fast paced, dynamic environment with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively
  • Advanced Degree Preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree - Computer Science, Engineering

Compensation Range:
Pay Range - Start:
$146,440.00
Pay Range - End:
$271,960.00
Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. At Northwestern Mutual, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. Positions in certain locations (such as California) may provide an increase on the standard pay structure based on the location.
