About the Role
Our highly talented Infrastructure teams continue to advance our container orchestration journey, and are looking for a candidate to join the Platform Engineering team. You will advise and support teams in converting and upgrading both internal and external-facing services, maintain the container orchestration infrastructure, and advocate for new Kubernetes and EKS features. These efforts are key to improving scalability, reliability and developer experience: all things we strive to achieve.
Many of our services today are already containerized, but require insightful planning, tooling and design to successfully work at scale and take advantage of Kubernetes features - our preferred orchestration platform. A developer in this role will also write microservices that run in a maintenance or management plane, providing better overall workload observability to reduce incident frequency and severity.
Some of the things you might work on include:
Enhancing our approach for Kubernetes (EKS) cluster provisioning, maintenance, upgrades and decommissioning, allowing service owners to achieve zero or low downtime for their workloads with minimal effort
Developing tools to detect public cloud provider service limits and automate corrective measures
For services and scenarios where fully automated remediation is not desired or feasible, writing microservices to extract actionable data from production systems - which allows reliability engineering team or service owners to achieve better understanding and faster resolution
Reviewing how R&D teams provision and use other managed cloud resources (load balancers, storage, databases, event streaming), enabling them to define and control these resources as code alongside their service itself
Researching new container technologies and Kubernetes APIs, running trials and proof-of-concept work that enhance capabilities, reduce cost, or are required to stay up to date
Continuously improving the security of the platform itself, including working across teams to provide least-privilege access with IAM policies, security groups and other access control mechanisms
Desired Skills and Experience
5+ years of experience working with Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure, with strong expertise in Amazon EKS
Have designed, built, run and maintained distributed, scalable systems with Kubernetes
Uses and promotes for infrastructure-as-code in public cloud (e.g. Helm, CloudFormation, Terraform, CDK)
Software development background in Python, Go or other high-level languages; writes maintainable code, with appropriate test coverage, that meets or exceeds industry security standards
Ability to collaborate closely with platform, SRE, and application teams to deliver self-service infrastructure capabilities
Advocates best practices in containerized services, and backs it up with concrete examples and tooling to achieve them
Experience operating highly available, fault-tolerant systems in multi-account or multi-environment cloud setups
Hands-on experience with observability stacks (logging, metrics, tracing) to monitor and troubleshoot distributed systems
Strong knowledge of Linux systems, container runtimes, and operating system fundamentals
Excellent written and oral communication
Additional Skills and Technologies
Experience in the following areas will also be an asset:
Strong experience with core AWS technologies including EC2, S3, Route 53, CloudWatch and IAM
Operated and administered Ubuntu, Amazon Linux, or other Linux variants
Observability, monitoring, metrics and alerting (eg: Prometheus, Thanos, Alert Manager, Grafana)
Cloud and Kubernetes security, including service mesh and policy-based controls

What We Do
The cybersecurity industry has an effectiveness problem. Every year new technologies, vendors, and solutions emerge, and yet despite this constant innovation we continue to see high profile breaches in the headlines. All organizations know they need better security, but the dizzying array of options leave resource-constrained IT and security leaders wondering how to proceed. At Arctic Wolf, our mission is to End Cyber Risk through effective security operations. To achieve this, we believe that organizations must do three key things:
