Huawei Canada has an immediate 12-month contract opening for a Senior Designer.
About the team:
The Huawei Human-Machine Interaction Lab unites global researchers, engineers, and designers to redefine human technology relationships through user centered, hands on research. We focus on agentic AI and multimodal interaction (voice, touch, vision, gesture) across smartphones, wearables, and emerging devices—advancing agentic workflows, multi-agent orchestration, and intuitive human-AI interfaces. By tightly integrating sensing, algorithms, and systems, our prototype driven work ships directly to products, enabling seamless task delegation and human AI collaboration at scale.
About the job:
Lead end-to-end product experience design for AI-powered terminal devices and multimodal interaction concepts, from early problem framing and user journeys to wireframes, prototypes, interaction specifications, and polished design artifacts, with a focus on hardware-software integration, system-level interaction, and agentic AI experiences.
Building on user insights and emerging AI capabilities, transform ambiguous research ideas into compelling product scenarios, seamless flows, and interaction models across voice, touch, vision, gesture, etc.
Explore, prototype and validate novel interaction paradigms on or beyond the screen, using tools such as Figma, ProtoPie, Framer, Principle, or similar platforms, communicating behavior, motion, feedback, and edge cases with exceptional clarity.
Collaborate closely with researchers, engineers, and product stakeholders to rapidly iterate on concepts, align technical feasibility with user value, and drive high-potential ideas toward production.
The total target annual compensation (based on 2,080 hours per year) ranges from $127,000 - $225,000 depending on education, experience, and demonstrated expertise.
About the ideal candidate:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, Industrial Design, Product Design, UX Design, Cognitive Science, or a related field; equivalent practical experience will also be considered.
5+ years of hands-on product, UX, interaction, or experience design work, ideally on consumer technology, mobile, wearable, AI, voice, multimodal, or emerging-device experiences. Preferred experience:
o Experience designing cohesive hardware–software experiences, with specific emphasis on OS-level UX, SysUI, or hardware-integrated design for AI-enabled devices, wearables, robotics, or spatial computing platforms.
o Experience defining system-level product architecture and interaction frameworks that span multiple products, services, or intelligent agents, going beyond standalone app design.
o Experience contributing to 0-to-1 product innovation, emerging technology incubation, or advanced concept development, including leveraging generative AI tools to rapidly explore and prototype.
A strong portfolio showcasing exceptional interaction design, systems thinking, rapid prototyping, visual clarity, and the ability to translate ambiguous opportunities into compelling user experiences with measurable impact on physical device platforms.
Deep understanding of human-centered design principles, with the ability to make complex AI behavior understandable and trustworthy through thoughtful interaction models, information architecture, conversational design, adaptive system behaviors, feedback patterns, error states, and controls—demonstrating clear expertise in designing for AI-driven environments versus traditional interaction paradigms.
Expertise in modern design and prototyping tools such as Figma, FigJam, ProtoPie, Framer, Principle, Adobe Creative Suite, or equivalent; ability to create high-fidelity interaction prototypes is an asset.
Experience collaborating closely with engineers, researchers, and cross-functional product teams in fast-moving, ambiguous environments, balancing technical feasibility, model capabilities, latency, privacy, accessibility, and business objectives.
Strong understanding of qualitative and quantitative UX research methods, such as user interviews, usability testing, competitive analysis, diary studies, heuristic evaluation, concept validation, and survey, with sound judgment in selecting and applying appropriate approaches to inform product strategy and design decisions.
Excellent storytelling and communication skills, with the ability to articulate design rationale, influence stakeholders, and align multidisciplinary teams around a shaped product experience.
