Why this role exists
The merchant lifecycle: onboarding, activation, and lifecycle across many surfaces, where consistency and reusability matter as much as any single flow. This role does double duty: raise the craft on the merchant lifecycle experience, and own the design system that keeps that experience coherent as the domain scales. You are the person who both designs the hard flow and builds the pattern that keeps the next ten from drifting.
What you'll own
- Product design in the Operational Journey cluster: onboarding, dashboard, and KYC-heavy lifecycle flow, reconciling clarity with compliance requirements.
- Design system consolidation (your first mission): take the existing design system, analyze and diagnose it, consolidate and document it properly, and establish tokens and patterns the whole team can build on.
- Design standards across the domain: you set the quality bar and guide design decisions in areas without a dedicated designer yet, including the developer-experience surface, through standards and critique, not by producing every screen.
- Mentorship: you raise the craft of other designers on the team when needed.
How you will work
You report to the Product Design & UX Director for Customer Lifecycle. You are the senior design owner in the domain at the outset, setting standards, shipping craft, and building the system others rely on. Your time splits between product work and system consolidation, weighted toward the system early while the foundation is built, then rebalancing toward product. The domain works from validated findings rather than assumptions and values direct, candid critique.
What we're looking for
In priority order:
- Product design craft, first and foremost. An excellent product designer with a portfolio that shows depth, complex flows made genuinely simple, decisions grounded in user problems rather than decoration. This is the primary bar.
- Systems thinking you can demonstrate. You have built reusable components, tokens, and patterns with rigor, thinking about consistency, versioning, and how others will use what you make. You need not have single-handedly rebuilt a legacy system, but you should show the instinct and the mechanics.
- Fluency with the discipline of disclosure. In regulated products, design is often the instrument of compliance, communicating required information so users genuinely understand it. Experience with this kind of high-stakes clarity is a strong signal.
A strong plus: consolidating or migrating an existing design system; fintech or payments product design; front-end literacy; a track record of mentoring designers up.
Skills Required
- Strong product design craft with a portfolio showing depth and complex flows simplified for users
- Experience designing onboarding, dashboard, or KYC-heavy lifecycle flows
- Systems thinking and experience building reusable components, tokens, and patterns
- Ability to consolidate, document, and establish design system standards and versioning
- Fluency with disclosure and designing for regulated products (clear compliance communication)
- Front-end literacy and ability to collaborate with developer-experience surfaces
- Experience consolidating or migrating an existing design system
- Fintech or payments product design experience
- Track record of mentoring and raising craft of other designers
