Maxar is seeking a Senior Database Engineer and Administrator to join our team in Reston, VA. This position is responsible for providing technical expertise for database design, development, implementation, information storage and retrieval, dataflow and analysis. You will provide technical expertise and leadership in the requirements analysis, design, implementation, and maintenance of high-volume geospatial and non-geospatial databases. You will use your critical thinking and problem-solving abilities to address complex issues involving database migration/translation, data model design, backup/recovery, information life cycle management, and disaster recovery for databases designed to support thousands of users. You must be able to support large enterprise initiatives and help resolve architectural issues in multiple environments and database infrastructures. You will develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of the existing database architecture and the application functionality but will also design and implement updates and changes.
Job Duties :
  • Work closely with IC customer to support database requirements analysis and definition for transition, integration, and maintenance.
  • Lead the design, develop and deployment of enterprise geodatabase capabilities, as part of an Agile development team.
  • Support SQL programming for building database views to support project requirements.
  • Database Tier troubleshooting and support to application programmers.
  • ArcGIS Python/ArcPy programming to support application web services, geodatabase level administration, and testing and performance tuning.
  • Support RDS Postgres Administration/ArcGIS Geodatabase Administration activities within a cloud infrastructure.
  • Assist with development and implementation of a Backup and Recovery Plan.
  • Present complex GIS and database technical demonstrations to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Prepare and present high-quality business and technically related documentation using project's Gitlab site and material migrated to Gitlab from previous Confluence/JIRA site.
  • Communicate and implement best practices for building and maintaining enterprise geodatabases.
  • Script deployment and integration of database solutions.

Required Qualifications:
  • Must be a US citizen with active TS/SCI CI poly clearance.
  • Bachelor's or master's in geography, computer science, engineering, mathematics, GIS, or a related field, depending on position level.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience with Esri geodatabase design, development, and management support in medium/large environments.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience with database architecture within virtual environments.
  • Strong knowledge of RDBMS internals (e.g., Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL).
  • Strong database administration and SQL skills.
  • Strong knowledge of Object-Relational Mapping (ORM) for various programming languages where ORM is used in-between the application logic and database layer.
  • Operating system knowledge (Unix, Linux, and/or Windows).
  • Proficient with automation of maintenance tasks using RDBMS SQL procedural language (e.g., PL/SQL, TSQL, PL/pgSQL) and scripting tools such as shell script, Perl or Python.
  • Superior troubleshooting skills, battle-tested in high-volume production environments.
  • Hands on experience with RDBMS installations & configuration.
  • Knowledge of Agile software development methodologies (Scrum).

The successful candidate's starting pay will fall within the salary range provided below and is determined based on job-related factors, including, but not limited to, the experience, qualifications, knowledge, skills, geographic work location, and market conditions. Candidates with the minimum necessary experience, qualifications, knowledge, and skillsets for the position should not expect to receive the upper end of the pay range.
The base pay for this position within California, Colorado, Hawaii, and the Washington, DC metropolitan area is:
$135,000.00 - $185,000.00
For all other states, we use geographic cost of labor as an input to develop market-driven ranges for our roles, and as such, each location where we hire may have a different range.
