Job Description

SUMMARY

This position is responsible for analyzing, designing, configuring, and maintaining the bank's database infrastructure and associated components. The role includes troubleshooting and resolving system errors and inefficiencies to ensure the database environment operates smoothly and effectively. Additionally, the Senior DBA will train junior database engineers and technicians, acting as a technical leader. They will collaborate closely with the database team to stay updated on changes in the environment, provide insights and recommendations on design and implementation plans, and maintain a comprehensive understanding of the overall database architecture. This individual will be involved in planning, communication, documentation, and implementation tasks related to infrastructure projects and will serve as an escalation point for support issues and service requests.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in SQL Server and Azure/AWS SQL, with a comprehensive understanding of database administration, performance tuning, and security. This role involves managing and maintaining our database systems to ensure high availability, performance, and security.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)

Database Management:

  • Design, implement, and maintain SQL Server databases environments
  • Perform database backup and restore operations to ensure data protection.
  • Manage database access using Role-Based Access Control (RBAC).
  • Implement and manage SQL Server Availability Groups and cluster technologies for high availability.
  • Manage SQL migrations and upgrades.
  • Manage and maintain Hybrid Cloud database infrastructures
  • Design and maintenance of database servers and clusters, including database continuity planning and data retention.
  • Database impact analysis, modeling, and capacity planning.
  • Design, configure, and manage system components such as SQL clusters, and SQL As A Service
  • Participate in on-call rotation for after-hours and weekend support.
  • Act as a technical resource for projects, ensuring work is being completed accurately and on-time.
  • Monitor the daily ticket queue for infrastructure support items. Responding to inquiries from staff, administrators, service providers, site personnel and outside vendors to provide technical assistance and support.
  • Maintain systems and applications uptime to support the enterprise through rigorous adherence to change control policies, pro-active monitoring for abnormal events, regular maintenance activities and willingness to work after normal business hours to meet the needs of the business.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align database solutions with organizational needs.

Performance and Monitoring:

  • Monitor and optimize database performance using execution plans and performance monitoring tools.
  • Set up and maintain database alerts and monitoring systems.
  • Troubleshoot and remediate SQL environment issues promptly.

Development and Automation:

  • Develop and manage T-SQL scripts, DML, and DDL operations.
  • Design and implement data models to support application requirements.
  • Automate routine database tasks and processes to improve efficiency.

ETL and Data Integration:

  • Design, develop, and maintain ETL processes using SSIS.
  • Understand and implement ETL concepts to support data integration.

SQL Project Management:

  • Lead SQL project initiatives, ensuring timely delivery and quality.
  • Coordinate and manage SQL build and run activities.

Security and Compliance:

  • Implement and manage Database Activity Monitoring (DAM) solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with data security standards and best practices.
  • Implement CIS Microsoft SQL Benchmarks as directed
  • Manage access control and security configurations for database environments.

Mentoring and Leadership:

  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior DBAs and development teams.
  • Share knowledge and best practices within the team.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Continuous learning through training courses and self-study
  • Active participation in team meetings and other activities
  • Travel to community banks, mortgage offices, insurance offices, and other locations will be required when necessary.
  • Some after-hours, weekend work and overnight trips will be expected
  • Completion of all required banking compliance exams on a yearly basis
  • Adherence to all First United Policies and Procedures 
  • Recommendations to supervisor about possible methods to improve operations 
  • Perform other duties as requested by Executive Management or Supervisor

EMPLOYEE SPECIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience as a SQL Server DBA or in a similar role.
  • Expertise in SSIS, backup and restore operations, RBAC, and T-SQL.
  • Experience with database automation tools and scripting languages (e.g., Python and PowerShell)
  • Strong knowledge of Azure/AWS SQL environments.
  • Experience building and supporting database disaster recovery environments and procedures.
  • Experience in data modeling, DML, and DDL.
  • Experience with availability groups and cluster technologies.
  • Solid understanding of execution/explain plans and performance tuning.
  • Proven experience in database and performance monitoring and alerting.
  • Experience in SQL project management, build and run processes.
  • Knowledge of Database Activity Monitoring (DAM) and ETL concepts.
  • Proficient in SQL environment troubleshooting and remediation.
  • Strong SQL automation skills.

Technical/Functional Competencies

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Visio
  • A strong understanding of programing logic and/or scripting languages
  • Certification in SQL Server or related technologies
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
