Position: Senior CSP Education Specialist

Department: Central Processing

Shift: 40 hours (Primarily Days w/ occasional off-shift rotation)

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Director of Central Sterile Processing Department, is responsible for the Central Sterile Processing (CSP) Department’s education and quality portfolios including full program development, implementation, and monitoring of successful educational outcomes; assesses quality data to plan interventions, and collaborates with operational management on program vision planning. Fosters an environment which promotes safe and efficient sterile processing skill sets. Functions in a managerial capacity and cross covers operational leaders as needed; coordinates content delivery through supervision of CSP educators and super users through development of a train the trainer series. Provides feedback, leadership coaching, and performs annual evaluations to associated direct reports. Recommends improvements in the quality of services provided by CSP, serves as the chairperson of CSP Confab, attends hopsital and system wide committees as designated by the Sr. Director of Surgical Services, and functions as a subject matter expert (SME) to hospital leaders and staff.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Knowledge & Skills

  • Develops and implements all aspects of the CSP education and orientation program, including formal class lectures, hands-on training, competency assessments, and orientation curriculum development for employees and affiliating students.

  • Delegates and assigns deliverables and/or projects to CSP educators in relation to overall educational programming, departmental quality outcomes, regulatory requirements, and/or other needs of the departments as designated.

  • Performs systematic follow-ups with CSP educators and CSP staff to verify and validate competency of basic sterile processing skillsets; develop, implement, and maintain.

  • Provides feedback to CSP Educators on work performance and completes associated annual evaluations; provides feedback to CSP leaders on orientee’s and trainees’ work performance.

  • Prepares and trains new CSP Educators and frontline staff to ensure BMC practices and policies are followed.  Identifies skills sets requiring follow-ups within appropriate plan to address.

  • Functions as the primary policy author for CSP and routes final drafts for preapproval through establsihed pathways prior to submitting to Policy & Procedural Committee.

  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate and interview job candidates and make recommendations regarding appropriate fit for organization and unit.

  • Coordinates with Operating Room (OR) leaders and OR Clinical Nurse Educators to schedule new OR & CSP employees for shadowing and observations between both departments.

  • Consistently evaluates and assesses department quality outcomes to develop interventions through training and educational programming.

  • Tracks, analyzes and reports on enrollment, completion patterns, and other related activities to training, developing base data and using statistical tables and graphic displays of database information.

  • Educates staff to new CSP technologies, changes in policies and procedures, and evaluates the effectiveness of such innovations.

  • Oversees CSP programs as assigned, such as Competency Program, Orientation, In-service Programs, employee records, etc.

  • Monitors progress of education and completion of CSP technicians preparing for certification exam and maintaining certification.

  • Demonstrates well-developed interpersonal skills necessary to interface effectively with all levels of staff and customers and to conduct group and individual instruction.

  • Demonstrates well-developed communications skills, both verbal and written, necessary to communicate in an articulate and effective manner in front of groups.

  • Provides effective feedback to the learner in a manner that is patient, constructive and enhances self-esteem.

Technical and Clinical Competence

  • Assists CSP in maintaining regulatory and professional standards, such as AORN, JCAHO, CDC, DPH, AAMI/ANSI, etc.

  • Develops, implements, reviews,  and revises annual competency program for CSP employees and implements adjustments to educational programming as needed.

  • Serves as a liaison between institutional departments, partners, and groups to establish collaborative programs.

  • Utilizes the Incident Reporting system for trending areas in need of improvement. Follows up on incident report communications to assist in the development of root cause analysis and make recommendations on resolutions and develop training materials to aid in the reduction of future defects.

Quality Improvement and Research

  • Maintains tracking and monitoring of Quality Event reports through the use of established dashboards.

  • Oversees unit-based QI projects and assists with developing training plans and ability to properly address QI findings.  

  • Utilizes quality improvement and evidence-based findings to enhance CSP.

  • Demonstrates critical thinking and conducts research appropriately and effectively- using appropriate evidence-based resources to verify and validate correct processes and techniques.  

Professional Development

  • Assumes responsibility for maintaining current knowledge and competency in CPD technology, AORN, AAMI/ANSI, HSPA, and other additional regulatory standards related to sterilization practices.

  • Assumes responsibility for maintaining current knowledge of adult education theory and teaching methods.

Other Duties

  • Manages special projects and coordinates assigned CSP initiatives.

  • Attends all required meetings.

  • Utilizes BMC’s Cultural Beliefs and Hospital Values as the basis for decision-making and to facilitate CSP’s and the hospital’s mission.

  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.

  • On a rotating basis, responsible for 24/7 leadership on-call coverage for CSP.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or as necessary.

  • Must adhere to all of BMC’s RESPECT behavioral standards.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Master’s Degree or Bachelors Degree + Extensive relevant experience required

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Must have current recognized sterile processing certification, such as the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA), International Association for Central Sterile Healthcare Material Management (IAHCSMM), Central Board of Sterile Processing Departments (CBSPD) or other related recognized certification such as Surgical Technician. Registered Nurse licensure is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have a minimum of 5 years of recent experience in CSP education & sterile processing management. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSA):

  • Ability to apply principles of adult learning theory required.

  • Critical thinking and analytical ability to solve technical clinical issues, conduct quality improvement and research utilization projects.

  • Advanced interpersonal and presentation skills in order to develop and conduct education programs, presentations, communicate with interdisciplinary team, and perform leadership responsibilities.

  • Computer proficiency inclusive of ability to access and enter data from computerized information systems; skills with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications required.

  • Organizational skills to set priorities for director reports and self; efficiently complete assigned work.

  • Ability to effectively evaluate the clinical technical competence of CSP Educators and PeriOperative Services staff.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills in English.

  • Multilingual skills (beyond that of English) appropriate to the employee populations served by the medical center preferred.

  • Physical ability to meet the core job responsibilities in accordance with practice setting.

Compensation Range:

$83,000.00- $120,500.00

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, skills, and certifications/licensures as they directly relate to position requirements; as well as business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market-competitiveness.
