About the job
OpenTable is looking for a highly motivated, practical, and business-oriented Senior Counsel, Privacy & Product to join our Legal team. You will serve as a trusted advisor to OpenTable’s Product, Engineering, Security, Commercial, Partnerships, and Marketing teams, providing strategic and practical counsel across product development, privacy and data protection, artificial intelligence, information security, consumer protection, and related regulatory matters. You will also serve as OpenTable’s Deputy Privacy Officer, helping lead and operationalize OpenTable’s global privacy program and serving as a key liaison with Booking Holdings, Inc. (BHI) on privacy and data protection matters. This role is ideal for a lawyer who enjoys working closely with commercial, product and technical teams, navigating emerging areas of law, and developing practical solutions that enable responsible innovation at scale.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a primary legal partner to OpenTable’s Product, Engineering, Security, Commercial, Partnerships, and Marketing teams, providing end-to-end counseling on new products, features, data uses, integrations, consumer experiences, and other strategic initiatives.
- Serve as Deputy Privacy Officer for OpenTable, helping lead and operationalize OpenTable’s global privacy program and serving as a key liaison with BHI on privacy strategy, governance, regulatory developments, and group-wide privacy initiatives.
- Advise on global privacy and data protection requirements and embed privacy-by-design principles into OpenTable’s products and operations, including counseling on data collection, use, sharing, retention, consent, personalization, and consumer rights.
- Provide strategic legal guidance on the development, deployment, procurement, and use of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, including generative AI and AI-powered product features, and help develop scalable AI governance frameworks as the regulatory landscape evolves.
- Provide strategic legal advice and guidance to Product teams regarding product development, launch, and sunsetting, with strong focus on legal risks related to data privacy, cybersecurity, data usage and ownership, consumer protection, and marketing.
- Partner closely with OpenTable’s Information Security team on cybersecurity and data security matters, including product and vendor security risk, security requirements, incident response, potential data breaches, regulatory obligations, and remediation.
- Identify and address emerging product, privacy, AI, security, consumer protection, and regulatory risks; draft and negotiate related agreements and terms; and develop scalable legal processes, policies, playbooks, and disclosures that enable the business to innovate responsibly.
Minimum Qualifications
- 8+ years of relevant legal experience, including significant experience advising on privacy, data protection, technology, and product matters, preferably in-house at a technology, consumer, marketplace, or other high-growth company.
- J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school and active membership in good standing in at least one U.S. state bar, or equivalent legal qualification and authorization to practice law in the United Kingdom.
- Deep knowledge of U.S. and global privacy and data protection laws, including GDPR and U.S. state privacy laws, as well as global consumer protection laws, with demonstrated experience translating complex legal and regulatory requirements into practical product and business guidance.
- Significant experience providing product counseling, including partnering directly with Product and Engineering teams on new products, features, data uses, and technology initiatives from development through launch.
- Experience supporting or helping lead a global privacy program, including privacy governance, policies, compliance frameworks, and cross-functional implementation.
- Experience advising on information security and cybersecurity matters, including security requirements, incident response, and related regulatory obligations.
- Strong judgment, communication, and stakeholder-management skills, with demonstrated ability to assess risk, navigate ambiguity, and provide practical advice to cross-functional teams and senior leaders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience advising on artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, including legal and regulatory considerations associated with developing, deploying, or procuring AI-enabled products and services.
- Experience working within a complex global organization or corporate group and partnering effectively with enterprise-level legal, privacy, security, compliance, or governance functions.
- CIPP/US, CIPP/E, CIPM, AIGP, or similar privacy or AI certification preferred.
- Work from (almost) anywhere for up to 20 days per year

There are a variety of factors that go into determining a salary range, including but not limited to external market benchmark data, geographic location, and years of experience sought/required. The range for this United States based role is $210,000-$220,000.

This role is eligible to be considered for an annual bonus and equity grant.
