We at Ericsson Packet Core (PC) development are a passionate team of engineers on a mission to build the world's best User Plane. We work in autonomous, empowered teams and take pride in developing technology that makes a difference in the lives of billions of people.
Our Packet Core User Plane enables mobile connectivity for a wide range of applications, from everyday mobile services to demanding use cases such as remote healthcare and connected and autonomous vehicles. As the industry moves further into 5G and cloud-native technologies, our solutions are increasingly deployed in complex, distributed environments built on public cloud and Cloud-as-a-Service (CaaS) platforms.
We are now looking for a Senior Cloud & System Integration Engineer to help us prepare, integrate and verify our Packet Core User Plane solution for deployment in our customers' cloud-native environments.
Our product
We are responsible for the development and maintenance of the Packet Core User Plane. The User Plane handles packet routing and forwarding in mobile data networks between the internet and the radio network. All 3G, 4G and 5G mobile traffic passes through the User Plane.
Our solution runs on multiple platforms, including carrier-grade routers, virtual machines and containers, and is increasingly integrated into cloud-native environments and customer-specific CaaS solutions.
This role focuses on making the complete solution work reliably in these environments.
This role goes beyond traditional software testing. You will work as a system-level engineer, solving complex integration and troubleshooting challenges across the Packet Core, cloud, infrastructure and networking layers.
What you will do
- Prepare, integrate and verify the Packet Core User Plane solution in customer-specific cloud-native CaaS environments.
- Work with public cloud and containerized infrastructure as part of complex end-to-end solutions.
- Investigate and troubleshoot issues across the full solution stack, from Packet Core components and applications through cloud infrastructure, containers and networking.
- Analyze logs, traces, metrics, packet captures and other technical information to identify root causes and drive issues towards resolution.
- Design and execute verification activities to validate that the complete solution meets functional, integration and deployment requirements.
- Collaborate with software developers, system engineers, cloud experts and other stakeholders to investigate and resolve complex technical problems.
- Work directly with external stakeholders during issue investigation, including technical discussions, fault reporting and joint troubleshooting.
- Take ownership of technical issues and drive them to resolution, even when the root cause crosses organizational or technology boundaries.
- Prepare and maintain test and integration environments and continuously improve the way we verify and troubleshoot our solutions.
- Automate repetitive verification and troubleshooting activities using scripting and appropriate tools.
- Document findings, root causes and solutions and communicate technical information clearly to both internal stakeholders and customers.
- Cooperate with other engineering and verification teams across Ericsson to ensure a consistent end-to-end solution.
The skills you bring
- Strong engineering mindset and a systematic, analytical approach to solving complex technical problems.
- Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills, preferably in distributed or cloud-based systems.
- Solid understanding of Linux and computer networking, including TCP/IP, routing and network troubleshooting.
- Experience working with cloud-native technologies, containers and/or Kubernetes.
- Experience in software verification, system integration, deployment or troubleshooting of complex software solutions.
- Ability to understand and troubleshoot problems across multiple layers of an end-to-end system.
- Ability to work independently, take ownership of problems and drive them towards resolution.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain complex technical issues clearly.
- Confidence in working directly with external stakeholders.
- Fluent English, both written and spoken.
It is an advantage if you also have
- Experience with public cloud platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud.
- Experience with CaaS environments and Kubernetes-based deployments.
- Knowledge of Packet Core architecture and 3GPP standards.
- Experience with mobile networks, L2/L3 networking or telecom protocols.
- Experience with IPSec, L2TP, TLS, MPLS, CGNAT, BGP, GRE or similar technologies.
- Experience with observability and troubleshooting tools, including logs, metrics, traces and packet captures (e.g. Prometheus, Grafana, Wireshark ).
- Experience with Python or other scripting and automation languages.
- Experience working in a customer-facing engineering, system integration or technical support role.
- Experience with Java, Gherkin or similar verification technologies.
What makes this role different?
This is not a role where success is measured by the number of executed test cases.
You will work with a complex end-to-end solution where a problem can originate anywhere - in the Packet Core software, the container platform, the network, the cloud infrastructure, the configuration or the interaction between components.
Your job is to understand the system, ask the right questions, investigate the evidence, identify the root cause and work with the right people to solve the problem.
You will have the opportunity to work directly with leading cloud and technology environments and with our customers, gaining a broad understanding of how large-scale, cloud-native telecom solutions are engineered and deployed.
If you enjoy solving difficult technical problems, understanding how complex systems work and finding out why something doesn't work when it should, this could be the role for you.
